Refugees in Canada: From Far and Wide: Common Ground
Description: When Paul Waldner went to his father, the leader of the Green Acres Hutterite Colony, asking if they should sponsor a Syrian family, the answer required no pause. He was told the Hutterites, themselves once refugees, thrived through the generosity of others. Shortly after, a family of four from Hama arrived. From coast to coast, Canadians continue to show an outpouring of support for Syrian refugees. By housing them and including them as members of the community, they create powerful, if unlikely, bonds of friendship. From Far and Wide profiles the diverse group stepping up to welcome these families, unbound by geography or language. Dolls of hope in Lebanon (TRAILER)
Description: “Each doll holds the name of the person whose story it carries.” In April last year, the Mousalli family – a Lebanese father, Syrian mother, and their daughters Marianne and Melina – decided to bring the stories and dreams of Syrian mothers in war-torn Aleppo closer to the world. Through a relative who remains in Syria, they collect the stories of ordinary Syrians, then turn them into sketches and have them embroidered onto cotton dolls by Syrian refugee women. Entitled ‘The Ana Collection’ – the word ‘Ana’ means ‘me’ in Arabic – the project seeks to address the hidden pain of Syrians who remain inside a country ravaged by war, through art and self-expression. Kristin Davis announced as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador
Description: Internationally acclaimed actress Kristin Davis has been announced as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Three years ago, Davis started her journey with UNHCR by travelling to Northern Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, meeting South Sudanese refugees and hearing their stories. Moved by refugee accounts, Davis wrote about her trip. Davis championed UNHCR’s work through media interviews and via her social media channels. She has also supported key UNHCR advocacy and fundraising events and campaigns - including traveling to Australia in 2016 to help raise funds for women victims of sexual violence in DR Congo. Accepting her new role, Davis said: “I am delighted to be part of this incredible organization and my latest trip came at a time of great concern for the refugee community. Over 65 million people around the world are now displaced and my hope is that by sharing these stories and meeting people as individuals and not numbers will help bridge understanding and compassion.” More information on Kristin’s work with UNHCR is available via www.unhcr.org/kristin-davis Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact us at drozditb@unhcr.org or tibaw@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. Germany: Sailmaking workshop hires Syrian refugees
Description: In a quiet textile workshop in northern Germany, far from the dangers and turmoil of war, Syrian refugees Mohammed Alsahani and his son Yousef measure, cut and stitch sailcloth to precise designs. The pair have found work with a sailmaker near the port of Kiel, repairing damaged sails and making sunshades, clothing and accessories from old sailcloth, poring over bolts of the hard-wearing fabric draped across wooden workbenches. Mohammed, who used to make curtains in Damascus, has adapted his skills to meet the demands of life on the Baltic coast. Together with his younger son, Yousef, he works full-time at Coastworxx, a textile workshop near the city. Mohammed was surprised how easily he made the switch to sewing sails. “I remember the first time we had a sail that had to be repaired,” said Mohammed, 51, speaking through a translator. “I’d never done that before, but I just watched what the others did. The next one I did by myself. I was very glad to see I could do this job.” www.unhcr.org/uk/news/stories/2017/4/58e391d84/syrians-find-outlet-sewing-skills-german-sailmaker.html Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact us at drozditb@unhcr.org or tibaw@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution.
