Then and Now: To freedom in Canada
Description: When Jean-Claude Ndereyahayo fled his home in Burundi, he came with nothing but a shirt he’d purchased at an airport shop. Arriving in Toronto, he was determined to make a life for himself. He enrolled in a community service program and soon found work after graduation in the same field. Now, he works with vulnerable and disadvantaged residents in Canada’s biggest city. “When you can feed your [family], when you can just help friends, when you can just contribute to the community. It means you are a free person,” he says. “Now I have the vision to make my life the fullest possible.” Then and Now highlights a diverse cross-section of refugees who have come to Canada over the years, in search safety, stability and a chance at a better life. Starting from 1956, when Canada accepted its first major wave of refugees, the project uses archived images and family photos to profile refugees from Hungary, Vietnam, Uganda, Somalia, Colombia, Cambodia, Burundi and El Salvador. UK: Welcoming refugees in the British countryside
Description: In a picturesque village in the East of England sits The Grange: a 1750s-rectory surrounded by ten acres of meadow, a lush lawn and a flourishing vegetable garden. Barn owls and kingfishers share their home with domestic ponies and sheep; guinea pigs and chickens can be heard squeaking and scratching at feeding time. This is where Ben and Sophie host retreats for refugees and asylum-seekers – providing a place of peace and welcome for people who have fled violence and war. Then and Now: A Salvadoran mother’s journey
Description: A social worker and lecturer at a university in El Salvador, Gladys Zuniga left behind her professional and personal life when she fled the lengthy civil war engulfing the country. Shortly after travelling with her three children and husband to Ontario, her husband felt too overwhelmed in their new country. He returned, leaving her to raise her children alone. Despite years of work as a social worker, she took a job in a factory shortly after arriving. She recalls a moment, hands swollen from the repetitive work, where she broke down in tears. Shortly after, she found work in a daycare- preparing food for the young children. It’s a job she proudly worked for 25 years, only planning to finally retire next year at age 70. "I always say to my kids- when you have a chance to help other people, just do it. Do it, because it's a gift!” she says.  Then and Now highlights a diverse cross-section of refugees who have come to Canada over the years, in search safety, stability and a chance at a better life.
