How To Help People Impacted By Drought In Northern Kenya
Description: Northern Kenya is experiencing drought and significantly below average rain falls. 2.6 million people are food insecure, and the area has seen a 5-fold increase in food prices, conflict around watering points, loss of livestock and an increase in malnutrition and infectious diseases. UNICEF has recently conducted a mass screening in Turkana, showing that 55% of children screened were acutely malnourished. The IRC’s mobile health teams are reaching remote populations of northern Kenya and treating cases of malnutrition. IRC mobile health team staff are out in the bush for a week at a time, serving the local communities and sleeping outside due to the extreme temperatures. Greece: refugee integration through education
Description: Abbas is 10 years old. He goes to school every day from 1.30 pm to 6.00 pm. Education for him has been a battle. He is Afghan and arrived at the Malakasa refugee camp in north-eastern Greece with his family a year and a half ago. He is one of 2 500 children living in camps who have started formal education in Greek schools. “I’ve been going to school for three months. It’s really important to study, it’s important for my future,” he tells us. Abbas and the other young refugees have been accepted in 93 schools across mainland Greece thanks to a transport scheme funded by EU Humanitarian Aid and implemented by the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM). The project started in October 2016 and now covers 32 camps. Video by Euronews
