People smugglers in Niger need new line of work
Description: The perilous journey of migrants and refugees who risk their lives to cross through Niger into Libya is facilitated by a vast, thriving industry. Agadez, Niger’s smuggling capital, lives off the business built around traffickers, drivers, currency traders and shop owners who sell kits for those who prepare to travel into the desert. All those people will all need to find new jobs if they are to leave the smuggling economy behind. Niger: A refugee life with dignity and HIV
Description: One of Africa’s poorest countries, Niger plays host to more than 160,000 refugees within its largely desert territory, most of whom have fled violence in neighbouring Mali and Nigeria and live in areas near the borders of those countries. In the capital Niamey, a much smaller group of West and Central African refugees live amongst the local population. It is hard to make ends meet in a country where nearly half the population lives on less than two dollars a day, and many long for the stability and safety that would allow them to go home. For the couple Pelaguie and Moké-Ekané, who are from Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has been two decades of waiting. Lebanon: NGO extends care to refugee babies
Description: In Lebanon, about 12% of babies born to refugee mothers require neonatal intensive care – but the high costs of specialised medicine puts it out of reach of too many. The medical NGO Birth and Beyond is working with UNHCR to build pediatric units in Lebanon that can extend quality care to the poorest families and their newest arrivals – both Lebanese and refugees alike.
