Photo Story of the Biocultural Community Protocol of the Kukula Traditional Health Practitioners
Description: The traditional health practitioners of Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, South Africa, ensure the health of their communities with traditional medicines and practices. Their livelihoods are being undermine by 'muti' from other parts of South Africa and by forced exclusion from state protected areas. They are coming together to develop and use their biocultural community protocol as the basis for advocating for rights and responsibilities under a variety of customary, national, and international laws.

It has been used to gain government recognition, reduce over-harvesting and to increase healers' access to protected areas.
It is also being used to negotiate with a cosmetics company to develop a product based on the healers' knowledge.
