Venezuela: Video Footage Exposes Brutality of Repression
Description: The scale and brutality of violent repression by Venezuelan security forces is evident in video footage shot in recent months. Since early April, tens of thousands of Venezuelans have taken to the streets to protest against Venezuela’s increasingly authoritarian government. The government has responded with a brutal crackdown on dissent. Security forces have shot demonstrators at point blank range, runover demonstrators with an armored vehicle, brutally beaten people who offered no resistance, arbitrarily arrested hundreds of demonstrators, bystanders, and critics and prosecuted them in military courts, and broken into homes.

Greece Should Protect Lone Migrant Kids
Description: Flawed and inadequate procedures leave unaccompanied migrant children on the Greek island of Lesbos housed with unrelated adults, vulnerable to abuse, and unable to access the specific care they need. Under Greek and international law, unaccompanied children are entitled to special care and protection. But flawed age assessment procedures mean that some of these children are wrongly deemed adults during registration. Other children claim to be adults believing it will allow them to avoid detention or because of bad advice by adults, but then realize they have made a mistake and try to persuade the authorities to register them correctly. They can spend months trying to change their official status, and in meantime often continue to be treated as adults.

Brazil: Zika Moms Struggle to get Help for their Children
Description: Brazil has not addressed longstanding human rights problems that allowed the Zika outbreak to escalate, leaving the population vulnerable to future outbreaks and other serious public health risks. The government declared an end to the national public health emergency related to the Zika virus in May 2017, but the Zika threat in Brazil remains. The outbreak hit as the country faced its worst economic recession in decades, forcing authorities to make difficult decisions about allocating resources. But even in earlier times of economic growth, government investments in water and sanitation infrastructure were inadequate. Years of neglect contributed to the water and wastewater conditions that allowed the proliferation of the Aedes mosquito and the rapid spread of the virus, Human Rights Watch found.

Ghana: People with Disabilities Freed from Chains
Description: The Mental Health Authority of Ghana has taken steps to release 16 people, including two girls, held in shackles at Nyakumasi Prayer Camp, a spiritual healing center in the Central Region. Those freed, some of whom have mental health conditions, were taken to nearby Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital on June 30, 2017. The government should adopt and enforce a ban on shackling, said a coalition of nongovernmental and advocacy groups including MindFreedom Ghana, Mental Health Society of Ghana, Basic Needs, Law and Development Associates, Human Rights Watch, CBM, and Disability Rights Advocacy Fund. The focus now should be on investing in appropriate community-based services to support people with mental health conditions to live full and independent lives in the community and ensuring that any mental health services are based on each individual’s free and informed consent.

Russia: Peaceful Protesters Arrested, Beaten
Description: Russian police arbitrarily detained hundreds of people during peaceful protests on June 12, 2017, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch interviewed more than a dozen people detained during the protests. Riot police in both cities used excessive force against protesters. If protesters questioned their detentions or refused to go willingly, the police handled them roughly and in some cases dragged them on the ground, beat them with truncheons, kicked them with booted feet, and punched them. Some of the abuse took place in full view of observers who filmed it with video cameras and cell phones. People also experienced ill-treatment near or inside police buses.
