Displaced families flee West Mosul
Description: Desperate to flee fighting, thousands of displaced Iraqis from west Mosul are arriving in Hammam al-Alil camp, a few kilometres south of the city. Many spend their first night in a reception centre awaiting their tents. Others are transferred to nearby camps to reunite with other family members. UNHCR has 13 camps open or under construction with capacity to host up to 145,000 people. Hammam al-Alil currently comprises a screening and transit site and government-built camp. UNHCR has almost completed a second camp to house 30,000 people. The first section of the camp is due to open next week, with capacity for 10,000 people. The number of people moving through Hammam al-Alil has surged in recent days, with around 8,000–12,000 arrivals daily. Work will soon begin in another UNHCR camp, As Salamiyah 2, south-east of Mosul, with projected capacity for up to 60,000 people. http://www.unhcr.org/news/latest/2017/3/58d39f9be9/unhcr-warns-mosul-situation-deteriorating-fighting-rages.html?query=mosul Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact us at drozditb@unhcr.org or tibaw@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. Iraq: ISIS Dumped Hundreds in Mass Grave
Description: The Islamic State (also known as ISIS) executed and dumped the bodies of possibly hundreds of detainees at a site near Mosul, Human Rights Watch said today. Multiple witnesses told Human Rights Watch that the bodies of those killed, including bodies of members of Iraqi security forces, were thrown into a naturally occurring sinkhole at a site known as Khafsa, about eight kilometers south of western Mosul. Local residents said that before pulling out of the area in mid-February, ISIS laid improvised landmines at the site, which are sometimes referred to as improvised explosive devices or booby traps.

Kurdistan Region of Iraq: Syrian refugee family moves back to camp
Description: Six years since the start of the Syrian conflict, life is getting increasingly tough for Syrian refugees in Iraq. More than 4,300 families in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq are hoping to move from substandard low-rent homes in villages and towns, to a UNHCR-supported refugee camp where shelter, education and other services are provided. But most of the camps are full and only limited numbers of the most vulnerable families will be able to make the move. “Life in exile is very difficult. Back in Kobane, we had friends; childhood friends we grew up with and family we loved. When we came here we knew no one,” he says. “We have to ration everything, we have to cut out many things from our lives to save up to pay rent, and sometimes we even skip meals.” www.unhcr.org/news/stories/2017/3/58c815644/iraqi-camps-syrians-seek-respite-hardship-exile.html Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact us at drozditb@unhcr.org or tibaw@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution.
