Description: Guatemala is the wealthiest of Feed the Future’s 19 focus countries, so why do its stunting levels rival those of Yemen and Malawi? Anemic public health and social service spending exacerbate rising poverty and stark inequality. A changing climate and high exposure to natural hazards pose further challenges to the rural agrarian poor.
The CSIS Global Food Security Project traveled to Guatemala in late 2016 to investigate the largest Feed the Future portfolio in the Americas, its technical strategy, its sectoral and geographical distribution of investments, and its coordination efforts within and beyond U.S. programming.

Description: WOLA and the Seattle International Foundation, in conjunction with the Congressional Central America Caucus, launched the Central America Monitor–a new project to track and analyze U.S. assistance programs in the region and evaluate the progress in Central America to reduce violence and insecurity, strengthen the rule of law, improve transparency and accountability, protect human rights, and combat corruption. The Monitor will provide a valuable tool to identify the areas of progress and shortfalls of the policies being implemented in the region in a form that is useful for policymakers, donors, academics, and the public. In this panel discussion, WOLA and our partners discuss this new project and its initial findings. Learn more at: https://www.wola.org/cam/

Description: Over half of refugees worldwide are children. These children lose their childhoods to war, gang violence, forced recruitment, human trafficking, domestic abuse, and sexual and gender-based violence including rape and femicide. In the face of danger, children must make a difficult choice: stay where it is familiar and risk persecution and even death, or flee to the unknown in search of safety. This video traces the stories of six children from the Northern Triangle of Central America who fled violence in search of safety.

Description: Marco, a young gay man from Honduras, fled to Mexico after his life was threatened by gang members. He is one of the estimated 500,000 people who flee Central America each year, and enter Mexico seeking safety and a chance for a better life. The violence many of these refugees and migrants have experienced is not unlike that of individuals living through war. Description: The latest apprehension numbers from US Customs and Border Protection suggest that Central American migrants, especially women with children and unaccompanied minors, continue to arrive at the U.S. border at an elevated rate. Violence directed at women and their families is believed to be a major driver of this migration and raises questions about how to reduce the violence and diminish the need for women and children to undertake the perilous journey north in search of safety. On January 11, we discussed this critical issue with a number of experts, including two women who have shown leadership on these issues while in public office.
