UN envoy lauds "solid assets" in Colombian peace process
Description: United Nations - Despite the logistical challenges and political uncertainty following the Colombian plebiscite last October, the country has a host of "solid assets" that can help to advance its peace process, UN envoy for Colombia, Jean Arnault, told the Security Council earlier today. Mr. Arnault was briefing the Council on the work of the UN Mission in Colombia, and the progress made in the implementation of the historic Peace Agreement reached last year. How to Guarantee Ethnic Minorities’ Rights in a Post-Conflict Colombia
Description: Pedro Cortes presented the main findings of the International Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights just released a report titled “Afrocolombian Men and Women after the accord.” In this, he analyzes the impact of the armed conflict on afrocolombian communities, the Ethnic Chapter and provides detailed recommendations for how to implement the peace accord in a manner that guarantees a differentiated approach for afrocolombians. Pedro is the Colombia Representative for the International Institute on Race, and Equality. As such, he is responsible for coordinating the Institute’s activities in Colombia, which focus on strengthening the advocacy capacity of Afro-Colombian, LGBTI and human rights organizations. He also supports the Institute’s training and research activities in the region. For 12 years prior to IRRE, Pedro worked to support the Afro-Colombian movement with the National Association of Internally Displaced Afro-Colombians (AFRODES). Pedro played a central role in supporting AFRODES’ first actions before the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Pedro is a PhD candidate at Howard University where he attended as a Fulbright Scholar from the Colombian Program for Afro-descendant Leaders. His doctoral dissertation is a comparative analysis of the international advocacy campaigns on human rights abuses concerning Brazilian and Colombian Afro-descendant communities.

Description: As the process comes to its closure, several Colombian Women Organizations are organizing the a Summit for Women and Peace in Bogota, from September 19 to 21. This Summit aims to contribute to building a more effective participation of women´s organizations throughout the peace process and to increasing the visibility and legitimacy of women as political actors in the referendum process that will take place after the Final Peace Accords. The Summit will also help to ensure that the implementation of the peace accords includes women´s voices.The Summit will count with the participation of 500 women with diverse political and regional backgrounds, as well as with different experiences in peacebuilding. The process will generate a dialogue that enables the construction of proposals to address the many challenges that might come with the implementation of the accords and the referendum.
