Highlights

  • WFP delivered food assistance for 4.2 million people in all 14 governorates in Syria, achieving 101 percent of its monthly plan.

  • WFP delivered food assistance for over 197,700 people in hard-to-reach locations through five crossline inter-agency convoys.

  • According to the 2017 WFP/FAO CFSAM report, released in late July, ten million people are in need of food assistance.

Highlights

  • In May, WFP ended the El Niño-induced drought EMOP. WFP assisted in total over 230,000 beneficiaries with emergency assistance, of which 142,000 received Cash Based Transfers (CBT). In May, 56,973 people received CBT.

  • In June, WFP assisted in total 7,932 beneficiaries through the Food by Prescription programme. Assistance to Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) is planned to resume in August 2017.

  • WFP’s Food by Prescription project remains underfunded, as a pipeline break, is expected in September 2017.

Highlights

  • WFP facilitated a humanitarian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) workshop and exercise simulation in Lima hosted by the National Institute for Civil Defence.

  • WFP continued its assistance of the National and Regional Governments in response to the national emergency situation. This month, the focus lay on evaluating the current situation of food and nutrition security and the report on lessons learned.

  • In Niger, new estimations indicate that there are 1.8 million people in need of food assistance, an increase of some 650,000 people.

  • Lean season assistance started during the reporting period, targeting some 250,000 people.

  • The number of food insecure people in the Diffa region is estimated to be 408,000, an increase of 25 percent since last years’ Cadre Harmonisé results.

  • WFP Executive Board approved the Namibia Country Strategic Plan (2017 - 2022). The CSP supports the Government in its drive to meet Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger. The CSP’s aim is to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture in Namibia by 2030.

  • WFP and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture conducted training for 70 School Feeding focal points from 35 schools in Khomas region.

A cholera epidemic is exploding in war-torn Yemen. At its current pace this easily treatable disease could soon kill more people than the Ebola epidemic of 2013-2015 in Guinea. Roughly four weeks from now, if left unchecked, cholera in Yemen could claim more than 2,544 lives. That’s how many Guinean lives were lost to Ebola in the West Africa outbreak that escalated to pandemic levels. In 12 weeks cholera deaths in Yemen could surpass the nearly 4,000 killed by Ebola in Sierra Leone.

India should abide by its international legal obligations and protect the Rohingya – a Muslim minority predominately from western Burma – from systematic abuse by Burmese officials and state security forces.
