Highlights

The Office of National Security has released disaggregated data on the people affected by the floods and mudslides, the injured and the recovered bodies. Out of 5,905 affected people, 2,607 are children and of the 493 bodies discovered, 157 are children.

Response operations continue despite the heavy rains experienced in Freetown in the past several days. In light of the continuing rains, efforts are also underway to establish preparedness mechanisms in high risk communities.

This report is produced by UNDAC team in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Sierra Leone and humanitarian partners. An emergency state was declared by Sierra Leone following floods and landslides leaving hundreds of people dead and destroyed thousands of homes on 14 August.

For the purpose of helping Colombian farmers be more prepared to face new climate patterns and adapt better to climate variability, CIAT, through its area of research in Decision and Policy Analysis (DAPA), trained the agro-climatology and systems teams from the National Federation of Rice Growers (Fedearroz) and from the National Federation of Cereal and Legume Growers (Fenalce) in the use of the platform: “Pronósticos Aclimate Colombia” (Acclimatize Colombia forecasts).

The protection of civilians in conflict remains a vital concern for the international community. South Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and other war-torn states have garnered international attention due in large part to the massive attacks on their civilian populations. However, it is not only bombshells and bullets that harm civilians during war. In Gaza, a tiny but densely populated seaside strip of the Palestinian Territories, the most recent threat is taking the form of basic resource manipulation, impacting two million Palestinian civilians.

Sudan signed a new agreement for the construction of model villages for displaced people in Darfur with the State of Qatar in the capital of Sudan on Monday.

The agreement for $70 million from the Qatari Fund for Development should boost development efforts in Darfur. Ten projects, two in each of the five states, are to include fully integrated villages for refugees and displaced people in Darfur to voluntarily relocate to from the camps.

KATHMANDU, Nepal – Working with local governments and farmers’ cooperatives, Heifer International has provided relief supplies to 11,000 families recovering from flooding that has ravaged Nepal’s biggest food-producing region.

The monsoon rains have submerged about 80 percent of the nation’s southern agricultural belt, washing away livestock and the recently planted rice crop. The flooding has affected more than 21,000 farming families that Heifer works with in the region.

Myanmar’s armed forces and some of the Southeast Asian country’s ethnic armed groups have long recruited and trafficked children to serve as soldiers, particularly in conflict-prone ethnic areas in the borderlands.

Military recruiters often snatch children under the pretext that they have committed a minor or nonexistent offense and tell them that they must serve in the army or go to jail. Others voluntarily join military organizations because their families are poor.

Aleppo, Syrian Arab Republic, 16 August, 2017 – For 21 year-old Angham who has spent all of her life in an orphanage for girls in Aleppo, life has been hard. As violence escalated in the city in 2012, Angham, together with her 67 housemates had to flee six times from one neighbourhood to another, seeking safety.

At the beginning of 2017, as volunteers went door-to-door in Aleppo to encourage children and young people to join life skills sessions at UNICEF-supported adolescent centres, they met Angham.

The Water Price Monitoring assessment aims to establish a data collection, monitoring and reporting system on water market prices in order to allow humanitarian and development actors to better analyse humanitarian needs in areas particularly affected by drought.

July data collection in Bay was conducted through a quantitative survey between 26 - 27 July, focusing only on those waterpoints in the region that are charging for water. The assessment has followed the official district boundaries of the region.
