UNMISS “Protection of Civilians” (PoC) Sites

As of 22 June 2017, a total of number of civilians seeking safety in six Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites located on UNMISS bases is 216,956 including 114,537 in Bentiu, 30,551 in Malakal, 38,448 in Juba UN House, 1,940 in Bor, 651 in Melut and 169 in UNMISS base and 30,660 in the area adjacent to UNMISS in Wau “.

More than 500,000 people living in coastal zones in Viet Nam are annually affected by typhoons. Many of them are very poor and live in unsafe houses. Families like that of 77-year-old Mr. Pham Van Ton in Hai Loc commune of Thanh Hoa Province live in small unsafe houses they cannot afford to repair. Mr Pham’s wife is disabled, and he fears if he and his family take a loan they will be unable to repay it. “Whenever a big storm comes, we are very worried that our house will collapse. We are so poor that we cannot have it repaired,” said Mr Pham.

The Migration Country Profiles project aspires to contribute to a better understanding of migratory trends across Africa and the Middle East towards Europe. The project focuses specifically on the 2016 top-ten countries of origin of migrants and six key countries of transit that migrants are likely to take before embarking on the Mediterranean or Aegean sea journeys.

The profiles take particular consideration the push factors of migration, including human rights, conflict, and development contexts of each country of origin and transit.

As communities displaced by flooding and landslides in Sri Lanka’s southwest return home, their needs must be addressed in the immediate and longer-term. Initial Government estimates indicate that priority areas include the implementation of disaster mitigation and prevention programmes, the reconstruction of housing, roads and schools, and the renovation of electricity and water networks. It is vital that immediate humanitarian needs are addressed, whilst ensuring that Disaster Risk Reduction measures inform the recovery of these communities.

WASHINGTON — Ethiopia’s highlands traditionally have a built-in protection for the people who live there. The elevation and the cool temperatures have meant that malaria, the deadly mosquito-borne illness, cannot be transmitted.

But climate change may be putting an end to that safeguard. A new study led by a researcher at the University of Maine found that since 1981, the elevation needed to protect people from malaria has risen by 100 meters.

Burmese government forces stand accused of detaining more than 300 ethnic Palaung villagers in northern Shan State, and compelling hundreds more to flee their homes.

Thaw Bi Ta, a Buddhist monk from the village of Man Lwal, told DVB on Monday that he has accepted 20 villagers from Ma Lan village into his monastery, while dozens of others were detained and beaten by Burmese army troops in Ma Lan.

MEKONG DELTA – The Mekong Delta, home to some 18 million inhabitants, is plagued by severe riverbank erosion, which has been blamed on climate change and human factors.

Unrelenting rain last month washed away riverbanks in Hoà Định Hamlet in Đồng Tháp Province’s Lai Vung District, causing several stretches of rural roads to plunge into the river.

Some of the stretches were 20 metres long and 3 metres wide, according to a report released by Lai Vung authorities.

They have put up warning signs at sites affected by the erosion to safeguard local residents.

YANGON – Former village administrator U Maung Mae told The Irrawaddy over the phone on Monday that around 100 residents from Tarein village in Rakhine State’s northern Maungdaw have left their homes following the killing of two men over the weekend.

Tarein is made up of 84 ethnic Rakhine households, with a total population of 156, the majority of whom rely on agriculture and paddy cultivation.
