Gabon: Floods DREF n° MDRGA006 - Final Report

Summary:

CHF 117,612 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 18 June 2012 to support the national society in delivering assistance to some 1,606 beneficiaries (321 families).

In early June 2012, a violent rainstorm hit Libreville, the capital of the Republic of Gabon, causing floods in the residential areas in more than 12 neighborhoods. The floodwaters caused extensive damage to houses and infrastructure, displacing families and causing injures and death.

Gaming for HIV prevention: a public-private partnership in Gabon

According to the Ministry of Health of Gabon, only 1 out of 2 young Gabonese aged 15-24 have a comprehensive knowledge on HIV in a country where the prevalence rate among youth aged 15-24 is about 4.8%, and 15% of youth have sexual relationships before the age of 15.

In an effort to revolutionise HIV prevention in Gabon, Shell Gabon in co-operation with the non-governmental organization Aiducators4life, the government and UNICEF launched an innovative tool aimed at stimulating discussions on HIV among youth (13+) in the country.

Des réfugiés congolais refusant de rentrer bloqués à la frontière

LIBREVILLE, 02 nov 2012 (AFP) - Une centaine de réfugiés congolais, expulsés par les autorités gabonaises qui ont mis fin à leur statut en juillet 2011, se trouvent actuellement "dans la zone neutre" entre les deux pays, refusant de rentrer dans leur pays, a affirmé l'un d'entre eux au téléphone à l'AFP.

"Nous sommes dans la zone neutre entre le Gabon et le Congo à Doussoula (poste frontière, sud-est Gabon). Nous refusons de rentrer au Congo", a affirmé à l'AFP Brice Manzet, qui s'est présenté comme un des 100 réfugiés.

Summary: CHF 117,612 was allocated from the IFRC Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Gabonese Red Cross National Society to provide emergency assistance to some 1,606 beneficiaries (321 families). Unearmarked funds to replenish DREF are encouraged.

This operation is expected to be implemented over 4 months, and will therefore be completed by the end of October, 2012; a Final Report will be made available by 7 January, 2013 (three months after the end of the operation).

(Libreville – 13 juin 2012) - Les Ministres et les Chefs de délégation des Etats-membres de la Communauté Economique des Etats de l'Afrique Centrale (CEEAC) ont adopté, ce jour, la Stratégie pour la prévention des risques, la gestion des catastrophes et l'adaptation aux changements climatiques, son Cadre d'action et le Plan d'action de Yaoundé pour la préparation et la réponse aux catastrophes en Afrique Centrale. Cet acte significatif a marqué la deuxième consultation régionale sur la gestion des catastrophes qui s'est tenue du 11 au 13 juin 2012 à Libreville, Gabon.

UN expert urges action to tackle trafficking of children from West and Central Africa

GENEVA (23 May 2012) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, urged the republic of Gabon to adopt urgent measures to tackle trafficking in children from West and Central Africa into the country, including traditional and cultural factors that exacerbate this phenomenon. “I am confident that Gabon can become a model for other countries in the region and beyond in the fight against trafficking,” she stressed.

Africa: High cost of child trafficking

POINTE NOIRE, 25 January 2012 (IRIN) - Forced child labour remains rampant in Central Africa, where poverty fuels the trafficking of children from poorer countries to oil-rich states such as Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Congo, according to experts.

"Trafficking in children is real," said Gabon's social affairs director-general, Mélanie Mbadinga Matsanga.

Summary: CHF 96,960 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 17 January, 2011 to support the Gabonese Red Cross National Society (GRCS) in delivering assistance to some 203 families, i.e. 1,015 beneficiaries.

In early January 2011, the localities of Tchimbanga, Franceville, Mimongo and Dzenzele experienced serious torrential rains and violent winds, affecting 353 families, i.e. 1,765 people and killing 1.

Q&A: A new chapter begins in Gabon for Congolese who fled fighting

LIBREVILLE, Gabon, September 30 (UNHCR) – At the end of July, the government of Gabon announced that civilians who fled conflict in neighbouring Republic of the Congo in the late 1990s would cease to be recognized as refugees. It also pledged to help those who wished to go home and said it would offer a dignified and durable solution for those who wish to remain in the central African country. Michel Biang, head of protocol at the Gabon Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recently discussed the issue with UNHCR External Relations Officer Céline Schmitt.

LIBREVILLE, Gabon, 3 août (HCR) – Anita avait 13 ans quand elle a fui la guerre au Congo Brazzaville en 1998. Agée aujourd'hui de 26 ans, elle décide de rester vivre au Gabon, son pays d'accueil.

C'est également le choix qu'auront à faire d'autres Congolais au Gabon après la cessation de leur statut de réfugié à la fin du mois dernier. Le HCR et les autorités attendent de la plupart des 9 300 réfugiés et demandeurs d'asile congolais qu'ils choisissent de rester au Gabon.

Gabon: Chikungunya and Dengue fever epidemics in Franceville, Lastourville and Koulamoutou DREF operation n° MDRGA004 final report

Summary: CHF 153,013 was allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 22 June, 2010 to support the Gabonese Red Cross Society in delivering assistance to 49,009 beneficiaries.

From April to July 2010, over 500 cases of Chikungunya and Dengue fever were discovered in Franceville, Lastourville, Koulamoutou, Moanda and Mounana, putting at risk some 50,000 people. IFRC utilized DREF funds to help the Gabonese Red Cross assist the affected people and prevent the further spread of the diseases. Thanks to the DREF,
