I. INTRODUCTION

The 2011 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (2011 EDHS) was conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and was implemented by the Central Statistical Agency from September 2010 through June 2011 with a nationally representative sample of nearly 18,500 households. The Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI) is responsible for the testing of HIV samples. All women age 15-49 and all men age 15-59 in these households were eligible for individual interview.

HIGHLIGHTS

Ethiopia Drought Situation

In Kebridahar, Somali Region, the number of suspected acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) cases reduced significantly during the last four days, suggesting stabilization of the outbreak. The on-going response is focused on case management, active case finding and a hygiene awareness campaign led by the Regional Health Bureau and supported by ACF, WHO and UNICEF. A WHO team from Addis Ababa arrived in the area during the week to support community level epidemiological studies for better understanding of the issues of transmission control.

Over 6 mln. Birr safe water projects go operational

Safe water projects, October 1, 2011 (Dilla) -

Safe water projects constructed in Abaya Woreda, Borena Zone of Oromia State in 2003EC with over six million Birr have gone operational, the woreda water and mines office said.

Deputy Head of the Office, Shibiru Tamiru told ENA that the projects include digging of seven water wells and construction of five water distribution centers.

The head said the projects have benefited more than 57,000 residents.

The government and humanitarian organizations covered the cost for construction of the projects.

Over 43,000 school age children get access to education service

E.Gojjam, October 1, 2011 (Debremarkos) - More than 43,000 school age children got access to education service in East Gojjam Zone, Amhara State, the zonal education department said.

Department Head, Atalel Kassa told ENA that 21,430 of the stated number of students are girls.

Atalel said joint efforts of coordination committees formed at different levels and the public helped to enable the students benefit from the service.

Preparations underway to develop 10,000 ha. land through irrigation

Debremarkos, October 1, 2011 (Debremarkos) - Preparations are underway to develop more than 10,000 hectares land through irrigation in rural localities in the environs of Motta Town, East Gojjam Zone of Amhara State during this year's dry season, the town agriculture office said.

Office Head, Walelign Alem told ENA on Friday that more than 34,000 farmers will take part in the irrigation development.

Walelign said 700 quintals fertilizer , nearly seven cubic meters compost and water pumping machines, among others, will be utilized to develop the land.

Monthly Market Watch, September 2011

Highlights

  • The country level general and food inflation rate increased by 40.1% and 51.3% respectively compared to September 2010. Cereal inflation rate increased by 61.9%.

  • Out of total procurement of EGTE from international markets, 115,000mt (38%) has arrived in country for distribution at subsidized price. The distribution of wheat grain depends on the price determined by the Government.

Field diary: A safety net for the most vulnerable families in drought-prone Tigray, Ethiopia

MEKELE, Ethiopia, 22 September 2011 - The town of Mekele in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, which borders Eritrea, is only an hour’s flight from the capital, Addis Ababa, but in some ways, it’s a world away.

War, drought and poverty have left their mark on Tigray. When you speak with people here, you find that most of them have a family member, friend or neighbour who lost a loved one in the famine of 1984 and 1985, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
