For Cubans, Post-Sandy Recovery Is Complex

Juan Vera

By Susan Kim*

February 12, 2013—When Dan Christopherson observed the damage in Cuba during Hurricane Sandy's aftermath, he saw widespread devastation to both churches and homes. Parts of Cuba were pummeled by Sandy's high winds. In other areas, he said, “it's not necessarily a strong wind, but it's a weak house.”

The end result was, unfortunately, the same.

Cuba has 357 Methodist churches, the majority of which are “house churches,” meaning that religious gatherings are held in a private residence.

Cuba struggles to contain fresh cholera outbreak

01/15/2013 23:08 GMT

by Francisco Jara

HAVANA, Jan 15, 2013 (AFP) - Cuba's second cholera outbreak in four months -- after 130 years without the disease -- has sickened more than 50 people and killed one in Havana, authorities and the family of the deceased said Tuesday.

The latest outbreak was from the same cholera strain found to have been introduced in Haiti by Nepalese UN peacekeepers, unleashing an epidemic in 2010 that has killed some 7,900 people.

Cholera Controls Extend to Cuban Capital

By Roberto de Jesús Guerra Pérez - Latin America

A rise in cholera cases in the Cuban capital Havana is being traced back to parts of the country worst affected by Hurricane Sandy two months ago.

Doctors who have recorded new cases of the disease during house-to-house inspections say the health ministry has declared a state of alert in the Jesús María and Belén communities of Habana Vieja municipality.

Habana Vieja – Old Havana – is a popular tourist area in the city centre.

Humanitarian Implementation Plan (HIP) Cuba (ECHO/CUB/BUD/2012/91000) - Last update 13/12/2012 Version 2

  1. MAJOR CHANGES SINCE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE HIP

After hurricane Sandy hit Cuba, it was clear that it was a major natural disaster and that at least EUR 4 million was needed to enable DG ECHO to contribute to addressing the needs. However, at the end of the year, DG ECHO's Operational Reserve was almost exhausted and only EUR 2 million was immediately available. Therefore a further EUR 2 million was requested from the Emergency Aid Reserve, and this HIP has now been updated to include this additional amount.

Mental Health, Another Victim of Climate Change

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Nov 23 2012 (IPS) - “The city looked as if it had been bombed. On the way to my office, I passed people who had the same shocked look on their faces as I did. We would look at each other, and even though we were strangers, we’d ask ‘How did things go for you? Did anything happen to your house?’ It was a kind of warm solidarity that did me a lot of good.”
