Successful first test of Tsunami Warning System for the North Atlantic and Mediterranean

The exercise organized on 27 and 28 November to evaluate the functioning of the Tsunami Warning System for the North East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adjacent Seas has taken place as scheduled. This real-time simulation, based on four scenarios in which earthquakes provoked tsunamis in different regions, demonstrated that the communication system for sending and receiving alert messages to concerned national authorities, worked smoothly.

North Atlantic and Mediterrenean tsunami warning system put to the test

A simulated tsunami will strike the western and eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and the North East Atlantic shoreline on 27 and 28 November, to test the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System for the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas. The exercise, named NEAMWave12, is organized under the umbrella of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

A below average crop was gathered in 2011

Harvesting of the 2011 cereal and pulses crops was completed in December.

Due to erratic precipitation during the cropping season and an early cessation of rainfall in September, the conditions of the maize crop, the only cereal grown, have been poor in most islands.

Cape Verde becomes the 119th State to join the Rome Statute system

On 10 October 2011, the government of the Republic of Cape Verde deposited its instrument of ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to the United Nations. The Statute will enter into force for Cape Verde on 1 January 2012, bringing the total number of States Parties to the Rome Statute to 119.

2010 Human Rights Report

Cape Verde, with a population of approximately 492,000, is a multiparty parliamentary democracy in which constitutional powers are shared between the elected head of state, President Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, and Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves. Pires was reelected for a second five-year term in 2006 in generally free and fair elections. The Supreme Court of Justice and the National Electoral Commission also declared the 2006 nationwide legislative elections generally free and fair.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation's disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters.

CHF 153,987 (USD 152,624 or EUR 101,867) has been allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund

Insufficient rainfall contributed to a decline in maize production in 2009
