Officials share lessons learned on local level disaster risk reduction in Bhutan

Thimphu, BHUTAN - On 2-3 April 3013, over 60 participants met in Bhutan’s capital city Thimphu for a national workshop to share lessons learned on integrating local-level disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into development planning processes.

Organized by the Department of Disaster Management, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with ADPC, the workshop aimed to reflect on the country’s progress for safer local development practices and local disaster reduction planning.

Earthquake recovery in schools

On 21 September 2009, Bhutan was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was in East Bhutan and affected 10 neighbouring districts. As well as damaging around 4,000 homes the earthquake damaged over 100 schools, affecting about 14,000 schoolchildren. The earthquake caused structural damage to classrooms, and water and sanitation facilities were destroyed.

US resettles 60,000 Bhutanese refugees

The United States has resettled as many as 60,000 Bhutanese refugees since the start of the resettlement process in 2007.

The 60,000th Bhutanese refugee departed to the US from Nepal on Tuesday (September 4). A 28-year-old refugee woman flew to Columbus, Ohio, with her husband and young daughter to start a new life there, the US embassy informed.

The US, in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), began resettling Bhutanese refugees residing in eastern Nepal in 2007.

CERF provides $1.6 million for shelter and temporary schooling for earthquake-affected populations in Bhutan

5 October 2011: The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided US$1,605,535 in life-saving funds for earthquake-affected populations in Bhutan.

More than 8,000 households have been affected by the earthquake, with the total collapse or major damage reported to 845 houses, 110 schools, 36 hospitals and health units and religious structures. An estimated 40,035 people have been directly affected with 4,225 persons displaced from their homes since the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on 18 September 2011.

Number of refugees from Bhutan departing for resettlement passes 50,000th mark

Nepal - A programme launched four years ago to resettle refugees from Bhutan from the camps in eastern Nepal passed the 50,000th mark on 1 August 2011.

Under a programme launched in November 2007, refugees originating from Bhutan have been resettled in eight countries, most of them to the United States. The other resettlement countries in rank are Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Signing of the Model Agreement on Customs Facilitation in Humanitarian Assistance

The UN has welcomed a decision by Bhutan to finalize the Model Customs Facilitation Agreement, a bilateral agreement allowing the expedition of aid to the country in the event of a disaster. The international humanitarian community considers this as a major step forward in strengthening preparedness and a pioneering initiative for others in the region.

Bhutan’s vulnerability to natural disasters led the Government to prioritize the rapid deployment of international aid in emergency situations by lowering customs barriers.

Aid Policy: Bhutanese deal signals swifter delivery

BANGKOK, 27 July 2011 (IRIN) - The UN has welcomed a decision by Bhutan to finalize the Model Customs Facilitation Agreement, a bilateral agreement allowing for the expedition of aid to the country in the event of a disaster.

Number of resettled Bhutanese crosses 48000 mark

The number of Bhutanese refugees resettled in third countries as per the resettlement plan of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reached 48,763 as of July 15, according to the UNHCR.

Most of them – 40,971 - have been resettled in various states of the United States of America (USA).

Likewise, 3,215 have been resettled in Canada, 2,720 in Australia, 563 in New Zealand, 483 in Denmark, 372 in Norway, 228 in Netherlands, and 111 United Kingdom.

Toys from France bring joy to refugee children in Nepal

BELDANGI CAMP, Nepal, June 22 (UNHCR) – Conditions might be relatively tough in eastern Nepal's Beldangi refugee camp, but for the past week or so the children there have been walking around with big happy faces.

The secret of their happiness lay in 41 large boxes that arrived in the camp earlier this month after being sent all the way from France's Quai Branly Museum, which specializes in primitive and indigenous art, cultures and civilizations from Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas.

Fire in two Bhutanese refugee camps (Goldhap and Sanischare) in eastern Nepal on 22 March 2011 destroyed 750 refugee shelters. The influx of Bhutanese refugees began in Nepal in the 1990s and there are at present 67,256 Bhutanese refugees staying in seven designated camps in eastern Nepal, nearly 500 kilometres east of the capital city
