40 die as Bangladesh early monsoon floods recede

DHAKA, May 30 (AFP) - A total of 40 people have been killed by floods in Bangladesh after heavy rains and monsoon storms swept parts of the country, but officials Tuesday said water was receding since rains had slackened.

After 36 deaths were reported in three days, the daily Bengali-language daily Muktakantha said Tuesday four more people were killed when they were hit by lightning in the southern districts of Patuakhali and Satkhira.

There had been no fresh rain in capital Dhaka and most other regions since Monday after three days of heavy rains and hail storms.

Situation and Damage

1. Severe winds accompanied by heavy rains swept across Bangladesh on 27 May 2000. According to the Office of the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Dhaka, no official damage report from the Bangladeshi Government is available so far. However, the media reports that 36 people were killed in 11 districts.

In the last few days, storms, flash floods, overflowing rivers and embankment erosions have claimed dozens of lives and destroyed tens of thousands of homes, chiefly along Bangladesh's major river system. The rains have come earlier than usual this year, and could herald bad flooding in a few months time. Two persons died yesterday, about 100 were injured, and over 25,000 thatched houses were damaged when storms battered large areas of Magura, Jhenaidah, Barisal and Shariatpur. The previous day a storm battered Dhaka, the capital, claiming 11 lives.

Bangladesh faces serious flood threat this year: officials

DHAKA, May 28 (AFP) - Bangladesh is threatened by a severe flood this year with the early arrival of monsoons and heavy rainfalls across the country, officials said here Sunday.

Preparations for flood and disaster early warning systems were reviewed at a disaster management ministry meeting, a ministry spokesman told AFP.

Army representatives and weather experts attended the meeting, which also reviewed the possible supply of relief materials should disaster strike.

Weather experts said they feared a deluge in the next month after early monsoon rains and the "La Nina"

Six killed, hundreds injured in new Bangladesh storms

DHAKA, May 3 (AFP) - At least six people were killed and hundreds injured in seasonal storms that hit Bangladesh this week, also damaging property and crops, newspapers reported here Wednesday.

Three victims died in northern Tangail district and three more in northeastern Moulvibazar which were battered by hail storms Tuesday, Inqilab and other local dailies reported, adding several other districts were also hit.

Two ferry sinkings in Bangladesh leave 45 dead, 200 missing: report

DHAKA, May 2 (AFP) - At least 45 people died and 200 were missing after two passenger ferries sank in eastern Bangladesh when they were caught by a storm, a report said Tuesday.

Dhaka's Bengali Daily Jugantar, quoting latest reports from its local correspondent in the major disaster site in Brahmanbaria, said 44 bodies of victims had been recovered and that 16 of them identified. The body of a woman victim was also recovered from the other sunken ferry.

Disaster Situation

1. On 21 April a ferocious northwesterly wind travelling at a speed of 120 kilometres an hour traversed the Districts of Netrokona and Rangpur in the north of Bangladesh. According to a report issued on 27 April by the Disaster Forum, a platform for several non-government organizations present in Bangladesh, the wind and accompanying hailstorm held for about an hour over the two Districts.

28 killed, 100 missing as ferries capsize in Bangladesh

Dhaka (dpa) - At least 28 people were killed and a 100 are missing after two river ferries capsized in central Bangladesh during a tropical storm, the state run radio said in Dhaka Tuesday.

The radio said the two boats were caught in the storm in the Meghna river late Monday night.

One of the ferries capsized near Ashuganj town, 90 kilometres east of the capital Dhaka, while the other was struck by strong winds near Nabinagar town further down river.
