Après le tremblement de terre du 12 janvier 2010, divers gouvernements latino-américains ont annoncé la suspension de la déportation d'Haïtiens, pour raisons humanitaires. Quelques gouvernements ont respecté cette suspension tandis que d'autres l'ont violée.

Event

Hurricane Irene is currently a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Additional strengthening is forecast in the next day and Irene could become a Category 4. Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane Irene is expected to continue in the northwestward direction near 12 mph through the night, as it neighbors the eastern coast of the United States.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeast Bahamas which includes the islands of: Inagua, Mayaguana, Long Cay, Acklins, Crooked and Ragged islands.

A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected in the warning area generally within 36 hours.

At 8:00am E.D.T., the center of Tomas was located near latitude 15.9=B0n and longitude 76.0=B0w or about 317 miles southwest on Inagua, 409 miles southwest of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands and 305 miles southwest of Port au Prince, Haiti.

CCRIF and CIMH to launch excess rainfall model for new insurance policy

Bridgetown, Barbados, 24 February, 2010 - The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) and the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) are launching their Regional Rainfall Model on Thursday, 25 February, 2010 at CIMH in Husbands, Barbados. This synthetic rainfall generation model will enable the provision of excess rainfall insurance policies for Caribbean countries via CCRIF, and will provide a valuable tool for the region aimed at better managing the risks of extreme rainfall events.

The Turks and Caicos Islands recover from devastating hurricanes

In the Turks and Caicos Islands, hundreds of people affected by hurricanes in September 2008 now have sanitation facilities thanks to a Red Cross recovery programme.

Between August and November 2008, many islands across the Caribbean were hit by a series of hurricanes, which caused deaths and severe damage to infrastructure. In the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), which were battered by hurricanes Hanna and Ike, hundreds of people lost their homes and around 7,000 people were affected. Fortunately, there was no loss of life.

UNICEF team visits hurricane ravaged Turks and Caicos Islands

GRAND TURK, 12 September 2008 - UNICEF is among international organizations on the ground in Turks and Caicos Islands conducting assessments and helping the island chain recover from the devastation left in the wake of powerful Hurricane Ike last weekend.

THE EVENT

Hurricane Ike a Category 4 system with sustained winds of 135 mph (215km/hr) impacted the Turks and Caicos Islands between September 6 and 7, 2008. This occurred one week after the passage of Tropical Storm Hanna which circled the islands twice before heading northward.

The Government of the Turks and Caicos declared a disaster area for Grand Turk and South Caicos Islands due to the extent and magnitude of damage and affected population.

Jamaica comes to the aid of hurricane ravaged Turks and Caicos Islands

The Government of Jamaica, has dispatched a team of six persons to the Turks and Caicos Islands, to provide support in the aftermath of the impact of Hurricane Ike, on the islands.

The Turks and Caicos, home to many Jamaicans, was hit by the powerful Category 4 Hurricane Ike on Sunday, September 7, destroying more than 80 percent of the homes. The hurricane also left the airport under water, downing power-lines and sweeping away every single boat.

EVENT:

Hurricane Ike affected the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Great Inagua Bahamas Islands on Saturday September 7, 2008. At the time of impact Ike was a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. At 2:00pm EDT today (Sept. 8), 2008, the Andros and Ragged Islands in the Bahamas remained under a Tropical Storm warning.

The Jamaican government has discontinued the Tropical Storm Watch for that island.

Hurricane Ike in Turks and Caicos: Appeal for health emergency needs

Introduction

Hurricane Ike passed over the Turks and Caicos Islands on the night of the 6-7 September 2008 as a Category 4 hurricane. The Turks and Caicos Islands have six main inhabited islands and are located 550 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, just below the Bahamas chain and just to the east of Cuba and the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti.)

The most affected Island was Grand Turk, which has 4,000 inhabitants and South Caicos, where no information is available about its 1,000 inhabitants.

In Grand Turk, 348 people were in shelters.

Red Cross responds to Hurricane Ike

The British Red Cross is appealing for urgent funds as Hurricane Ike has struck the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane Ike hit the islands on Sunday 7 September as a category 4 hurricane, exactly 48 years to the day since the last major storm, Hurricane Donna, wrought havoc on the region.

The British overseas territory had already been battered by five days of storms after Hurricane Hanna hit the islands at category 1 strength, making the 12,000 people on the islands who are living in flimsy shack-like housing extremely vulnerable.
