Suite à la confirmation de plusieurs cas de fièvre de Lassa au Togo, l’organisation médicale ALIMA (The Alliance For International Medical Action) a fait un don de médicaments et de matériel médical – dont des kits de protection au Ministère de la Santé togolais. « Ces kits permettront au personnel médical de se protéger d’un patient infecté afin de procurer des soins médicaux adaptés en toute sécurité », explique Mélanie Tarabbo, coordinatrice médicale pour ALIMA.

LOME/DAKAR, April 25, 2017 - Following the confirmation of several cases of Lassa fever in Togo, the medical organization ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action) donated medicines and medical equipment, including personal protection kits, to the Togolese Ministry of Health. "These kits will allow medical personnel to protect themselves from an infected patient, in order to provide safe and appropriate medical care," said Mélanie Tarabbo, medical coordinator for ALIMA.

Suite à la confirmation de plusieurs cas de fièvre de Lassa au Togo, une équipe d’ALIMA (The Alliance For International Medical Action) mène actuellement une évaluation des besoins dans les structures médicales et au sein de la population dans la Région des savanes au nord du pays.

Selon le Ministère de la santé togolais, depuis le 25 février, au moins 7 cas confirmés et 4 décès ont été rapportés. Plusieurs dizaines de contacts sont actuellement suivis par les autorités sanitaires.

Following confirmation of several cases of Lassa fever in Togo, a team from ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action) is currently conducting a needs assessment of the health structures and local population in Togo’s Savannah region, in the north of the country.

According to the Togolese Ministry of Health, since February 25, at least seven cases have been confirmed and four deaths were reported. Dozens of contacts are currently being monitored.

The announcement follows a formal validation by the World Health Organization (WHO) which congratulated the Togolese government for this historic achievement.

An outbreak of Lassa fever that poses a risk to nearly a million people in northern Togo has become the focus of the 100th crisis response financed by the Start Fund.

Schoolchildren will play a key role in a project run by Plan International which aims to raise people’s awareness of the potentially deadly virus and encourage them to react quickly to the appearance of its symptoms. They will be taught what to look out for and precautions that can prevent the disease spreading, and urged to share the knowledge with their families and communities.

Since 1 January 2017, 201 suspected cases of meningitis with 17 deaths were reported by 19 health districts. In week 2, the district of Akebou which is part of the Plateau Region issued an alert after four cases of meningitis were reported. In week 4, the epidemic threshold was reached with nine cases and an attack rate of 12.4 per 100 000 inhabitants. From 2 January to 12 February 2017, 48 suspected meningitis cases with three deaths were reported (case fatality rate of 6.3%). Of these, 14 specimens were confirmed as Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W by PCR.

Around 300 people from the Government, the civil society, and the private sector attended the event. The Prime Minister and the traditional chiefs were present.
