Deliver Justice for 2010 Political Violence

Reject Blanket Amnesty, Prosecute Perpetrators From All Sides

(New York, May 18, 2013) – Three years on, the Thai government has failed to fulfill its promise to impartially prosecute all those responsible for the 2010 political violence, Human Rights Watch said today. Amnesty legislation being proposed by leading members of the ruling Pheu Thai Party would shield perpetrators of serious abuses from accountability and should be rejected.

Cyclone Mahasen brings rain to Thailand’s eastern and western parts

BANGKOK, 14 May 2013 (NNT) - Residents in the western and eastern parts of Thailand have been warned to brace for more heavy rains as cyclone Mahasen makes landfall in the region.

The Meteorological Department reported that the cyclone is making landfall in Bangladesh tomorrow, bringing more storms to provinces in the East and West during the next couple of days.

(New York, May 15, 2013) – Separatist insurgents in Thailand's southern border provinces are committing war crimes by targeting children and other civilians, Human Rights Watch said today. The Thai government should address the cycle of deadly reprisals by investigating and prosecuting state security personnel implicated in abuses against ethnic Malay Muslims.

54 provinces still need drought-relief assistance

BANGKOK, 14 May 2013 (NNT) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has reported that there are still 54 provinces in need of emergency drought-relief assistance.

The DDPM Director General says that approximately 556 districts, 3,740 sub-districts and 36,580 villages in 54 provinces are still under risk of drought disasters. However, the southern province of Satun has been taken out of the list of disaster-hit provinces.

Transport Min distributes water to residents in Nakhon Ratchasima

BANGKOK, 14 May 2013 (NNT) – The Transport Ministry has distributed 50,000 liters of water to residents in Nakhon Ratchasima as drought continues in the province.

Deputy Transport Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong led a team of Transport officials and a convoy of water trucks on a field visit to Sung Noen District, which has been hard hit by drought. The team has provided drought-affected residents with around 50,000 liters of water for household use and consumption.

Deep-South teachers unsure about security programs for new school term

Public Health Min to stop spread of Malaria in 7 years

BANGKOK, 6 May 2013 (NNT)-The Ministry of Public Health is aiming to stop the outbreak of Malaria in Thailand within the next 7 years after nearly 2,500 people have been found with the disease so far this year.

According to Public Health Minister Dr. Pradit Sintawanarong, the Ministry has launched a campaign to stop the outbreak of Malaria permanently in 80% of the country’s total areas. Under the scheme, health examination services have been provided in the area where contraction of Malaria has been reported whilst those with infections will be treated on the spot.

Training of camp-based trainers to provide vocational education to Myanmar refugees

BANGKOK [ACTED News] - ACTED recently selected 15 refugees living in two refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border to undergo a Training-of-Trainers (ToT) programme that aims to provide refugees from Myanmar with the technical skills to find a job in their home country once they feel ready and safe to return. This action has been undergone in the context of ACTED’s vocational training project funded by the European Commission.

Drought worsens in Buriram; 31 provinces remain drought-stricken

BURIRAM, 3 May 2013 (NNT) – The drought situation in Buriram has intensified to encompass every district in the province, creating hardship for as many as 150,000 families.

The water levels at all of Buriram's 16 reservoirs continue to recede. Only 5.9 million cubic meters, or 20% capacity, remains at Huay Charakhae Mak reservoir, a major source of raw water which feeds the tap water system serving around 23,000 households.

33 people die of dengue fever during Jan 1 to April 30

BANGKOK, 2 May 2013 (NNT) – The Disease Control Department (DDC) has reported that 33 people have died of dengue fever, while trying to raise public awareness of the disease.

The Department of Disease Control under the Public Health Ministry has hosted an event to raise awareness of dengue fever.

According to Disease Control Department Director-General Pornthep Siriwanarangsan, over 26,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported during January 1st to April 30th; 33 of the patients died.

Toddler among six dead in Thai south shooting: official

PATTANI, Thailand, May 2, 2013 (AFP) - A three-year-old boy was among six people shot dead when gunmen opened fire on a village grocery shop in Thailand's restive south, a Thai security official said Thursday, vowing tentative peace talks would continue.

Four men dressed in similar uniforms to the Thai security forces sprayed bullets at a group of villagers gathered outside a local shop in Pattani province on Wednesday evening, said National Security Council chief Paradorn Pattanatabut.

Fire destroys Ban Mae Surin refugee camp on Thai-Burma border

Caritas Australia, the international aid and development organisation of the Catholic Church, has committed $70,000 AUD in emergency response assistance following the destruction of Ban Mae Surin Refugee Camp on the Thai-Burma border, one of the most remote and vulnerable in the region.

The money Caritas is providing will go to helping Caritas Australia’s long-term partners The Border Consortium (TBC) and Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) in providing humanitarian assistance to those refugees in the camp.

NSC: Peace talks to go ahead on April 29

BANGKOK, 22 April 2013 (NNT) - National Security Council (NSC) Secretary General Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanatabut has confirmed that the peace dialogue between the Thai government and the BRN separatist group will not be postponed.

Lt Gen Paradorn expressed his belief that the peace talks, set to involve multiple insurgent groups in Thailand’s Deep South, will eventually lead to long lasting peace in the region.

48 provinces nationwide declare drought disaster zones

BANGKOK, 19 April 2013 (NNT) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has declared 48 provinces nationwide drought disaster zones, with 31 of them hardest hit.

Among the 48 drought-hit provinces are Kalasin, Sukhothai, Tak, Chiang Rai and Ranong. 31 provinces in the North, Northeast and East continue to be gripped by worsening drought, which covers more than 50 percent of the entire province.
