UNRWA students in Syria continue education despite violence

In the midst of conflict, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is doing its best to support the continued education of students in Syria.

Students in the country have faced mounting obstacles in pursuing education, with thousands fleeing the violence and others unable to access their schools since the beginning of the three-year-old conflict.

As the end of the year approaches, many of them are worried about the upcoming exams, but are determined to take them and continue with their schooling.

UAE Red Crescent Authority donates US$500,000 to UNRWA to support Palestinian refugees in Syria

The UAE Red Crescent Authority has positively responded to UNRWA’s appeal to support conflict-affected Palestinian refugees caught up in the conflict in Syria. With a generous donation of US$ 500,000, UNRWA will provide food to approximately 40,561 Palestinian refugees (over 10,000 families) and hygiene kits to an estimated 3,915 vulnerable adults and babies. The locations of the distribution will be in conflict-affected areas and in UNRWA facilities sheltering internally displaced Palestinian refugees.

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation and UNRWA continue to provide cash assistance to Palestine refugees in Syria

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has distributed the first quarter of emergency cash assistance provided by the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation (KAHF) to Palestine refugees in Syria. The US$ 100,000 contribution, made in October of last year, has enabled members of this vulnerable population to meet their immediate food needs in recent months. The collaboration between UNRWA and KAHF to distribute emergency cash assistance to those most in need will continue throughout 2013.

UNRWA deplores killing of five Palestine children refugees

It is with great distress that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has learned of the violent deaths of five Palestine refugee children, one in Dera'a on 15 March and four others in the Damascus area on 19 March. Four of the children reportedly died as a result of the use of heavy weapons.

UNRWA statement on killing of UNRWA staff member

On International Women’s Day, UNRWA fights back against violence against women

UNRWA condemns attacks on Palestinian children in Syria

Damascus, Syria

On the afternoon of 25 February, Basem al-Hindi, a 14 year-old Palestine refugee living in Syria, sustained serious shrapnel wounds to his head when a suspected mortar round exploded on a public road in Damascus. A few hours later, Basem died of his wounds. This fatal incident occurred in Qaboun, Damascus, within metres of UNRWA’s Tantouri School, where Basem was a student. Tantouri is one of thirty schools managed by UNRWA and currently functioning in the wider area of Rif Damascus.
