Climate Change Threatens Water and Food Security in Antigua

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, Jun 12 2013 (IPS) - With their islands devoid of rivers or streams, farmers in Antigua and Barbuda have been building dams and ponds for centuries, harvesting rainwater to irrigate their crops and provide drinking water for their livestock.

But now with the advent of climate change, they are facing major challenges. Stronger and more frequent storms regularly destroy trees planted around catchment areas as watershed as well as grass planted in and around these areas to slow evaporation.

Schools Presented With Disaster Management Kits

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) has presented four schools with useful tools that should assist them in enhancing the disaster management programme at the institutions.

Director of NODS Philmore Mullin handed over information kits, evacuation maps and other implements to TN Kirnon Primary, Adele School, the School for the Deaf and the Nyahbinghi Theocracy Church School.

National Comprehensive Disaster Management Policy And Strategy In The Works

A local Consultant has begun the work of developing a National Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Policy and Strategy for Antigua and Barbuda.

Director of Kingdome Consultants Dorbrene O’Marde is expected to hold consultations over a ten-week period before submitting his final report. The CDM strategy and framework focuses on all hazards in all phases of disaster management, namely preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.

Damage Assessment And Needs Analysis Workshop Wraps

Approximately 20 representatives from various communities and government agencies were provided last week with the knowledge and skills needed to make assessments following a disaster.

The individuals were involved in a three-day damage assessment and needs analysis workshop facilitated by Cecil Shillingford, a Consultant with USAID’s Office of Foreign Development Assistance (ODFA).

Disaster management plans for government ministries

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) is continuing to push for the completion of comprehensive disaster management plans for all government ministries.

According to a Cabinet decision taken last year, the transition should be made from hurricane plans to comprehensive disaster management plans by the end of June.

Antigua and Barbuda receive UN, OAS support for plan to eradicate hunger

St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, 3 January 2013 (PAHO/WHO) - A joint mission of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP), and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) visited Antigua and Barbados recently to support a new initiative to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty in the country over the next two years.

Tiny Barbuda Fears Increasingly Hostile Climate

CODRINGTON, Barbuda, Nov 30 2012 (IPS) - Local scientists are warning the tiny 62-square-mile island of Barbuda is becoming one of the most vulnerable spots on earth to the consequences of climate change.

“We are small, we are flat…and if the climate change predictions come true, especially with respect to sea level rise, you are looking at potentially a third of the island being not available for the sort of things we are using it for right now,” marine biologist John Mussington told IPS.

National Office of Disaster Services Director Urge Hurricane Preparedness

With the hurricane season upon us, the National Office of Disaster Preparedness (NODS) is the main entity that assists Antiguans and Barbudans prepare for impending tropical depressions, storms or hurricanes.

In light of the recent passage of Tropical Storm Isaac, Director of NODS Mr. Philmore Mullin urges the public to make use of the information given to them in a timely manner. Mr. Mullin also highlighted the many facets of NODS as they relate to helping citizens prepare for impending disasters.

NODS Urges Residents in Low-lying areas to Move to higher Ground

In light of the effects that are expected from Tropical Storm Maria, the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) is asking residents living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground or seek refuge in public shelters.

These include areas such as West Palm Beach, Jennings, Ebenezer, Bolans, Pigotts, Green Bay, Grays Farm, Five Islands, Golden Grove Extension, Yorks Village and Bathlodge.

At least one shelter will be opened in each of the 17 districts in Antigua and Barbuda.

United Nations Development Programme Meeting Report

Antigua and Barbuda and other Caricom member states are being brought up to date with changes made at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to enhance the process to access emergency support.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation Worthene George and Director of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) Philmore Mullin recently attended a one-day meeting in Barbados which addressed the issue.

UNDAC Missions in Americas (from 1993 to January 2011)

What is UNDAC?
The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) is part of the international emergency response system for sudden-onset emergencies.
UNDAC was created in 1993. It is designed to help the United Nations and governments of disaster-affected countries during the first phase of a sudden-onset emergency. UNDAC also assists in the coordination of incoming international relief at national level and/or at the site of the emergency.

CDEMA Situation Report #3 - Hurricane Earl

MESSAGE:

Warnings lifted for CDEMA Participating States; Damage Assessments being finalised

THE SITUATION:

Tropical Storm Warnings have been lifted for Turks and Caicos Islands, south eastern Bahamas and San Salvador Island in the Bahamas

Hurricane Earl is now a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale. Maximum winds are 125 mph (205 km/hr) with higher gusts. Some strengthening of this system is possible.

At 2 p.m., the Centre of Hurricane Earl was located at Latitude 25.7 North, Longitude 72.7 West. Hurricane Earl is moving toward the northwest near 17 mph (28 km/hr).
