Safe water supply

The island of Bequia in St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean had no sustainable supply of safe water for its 4,874 people. With support from several donors, including Australia, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5Cs) managed the design and construction of a salt-water reverse osmosis water plant on the island. Sustainably powered by photovoltaic solar panels, the potable water is produced at two-thirds of the cost of importing water from other islands. The water is also of higher quality than alternative, more expensive sources.

ROK to Provide St. Vincent and the Grenadines with US$50,000 in Humanitarian Assistance

Saint Vincent and Grenadines: Natural Forest Destroyed During Tomas

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says Hurricane Tomas, which battered St. Vincent and the Grenadines last October, has caused an estimated 31-million dollars in damage to the natural forest.

The Prime Minister made the disclosure during a News Conference at Cabinet Room yesterday 28th December 2010..

He noted that the country's forests were severely impacted by the passage of the storm

Saint Vincent and Grenadines: Tomas Recovery Should End By March

General Manager of the Housing and Land Development Corporation, Maurice Slater is anticipating that the Hurricane Tomas Reconstruction and Recovery Programme will be completed by March next year.

Since the passage of Hurricane Tomas on October 30th, Government has been taking an active role in housing recovery. Mr. Slater told NBC News that they have been focusing mainly on rebuilding and repairing houses for displaced victims. He said this process is likely to continue until March next year.

Mr.Slater says there are some special cases where homeowners are receiving immediate attention.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: HOUSING AND LAND CONTINUES WITH OPERATION RECOVERY

The Housing and Land Development Corporation is continuing to play an active role in the Operation Recovery and Reconstruction process here following the passage of Hurricane Tomas.

General Manager Maurice Slater says so far they have repaired and rebuilt hundreds of houses for residents across mainland St. Vincent. He says because of the extent of the damage to houses, the rebuilding process would cost must more than originally budgeted.

Mr. Slater estimates that an additional sum of 30-million dollars is needed to complete the rebuilding process.

Deadly rains in St.Vincent and the Grenadines

On Friday, September 19, 2008, as a result of the passage of a tropical wave, St Vincent and the Grenadines was drenched by heavy rains which resulted in one (1) death, island wide flooding and landslides which left many roads blocked.

The heavy rains began at about 2.00am and continued for approximately the next twenty four hours. By 6.00am residents were reporting houses being flooded out, rivers overflowing bridges and landslides in several areas of the country. All schools were closed by midday on Friday.

CDERA Situation Report No. 1 - Heavy rains in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

NATURE OF EVENT: Heavy Morning rains associated with a trough system have resulted in flooding and landslides in several areas of the country. Between 8:00p.m last night and 6:00 am this morning, almost two (2) inches of rainfall was recorded at the E.T Joshua Airport.

At 11:00a.m today, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Office placed St. Vincent and the Grenadines under flood warning until 6:00p.m today.
