LISBON, Aug 22 (AFP) - Wildfires
have destroyed more than 330,000 hectares (815,000 acres) of forest in
Portugal since the start of the year, a record figure, according to updated
numbers released on Friday by Portuguese forestry officials.
Some 336,000 hectares of forest and scrubland
have been burned, according to a provisional estimate, the forest service
said in a statement.
The estimate, which does not include
damaged farmland, still requires final confirmation, the statement said.
