More than 75.000 children vaccinated against polio

Menongue – Some 75. 159 children, under the age of five, were immunised against poliomyelitis in Menongue municipality, south-eastern Kuando Kubango province, during the vaccination campaign held over the last weekend.

This was said to Angop on Tuesday by the director of the local health sector, Carlos António Jonas.

He considered positive the campaign, having into account that figures overcame the expectations, thanks to the role played by the teams involved in the awareness campaigns.

Massive scale-up targets malnutrition in Angola

A new report by UNICEF to be issued on 15 April reveals the high prevalence of stunting in children under 5, but also outlines the tremendous opportunities that exist to make it a problem of the past.

CAALA, Angola, 10 April 2013 – When Eunice brought 1-year-old Marilia to the therapeutic feeding centre in Caala, Huambo Province, the baby was in critical condition. She had swollen legs and hands and was refusing all food, including breast milk.

ECHO allocates €15 million to address humanitarian needs in Southern Africa

21/12/2012 - The European Commission is allocating €15 million from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) to help the most vulnerable people affected by persistent drought in the Southern African countries of Angola, Lesotho, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The new funding brings the Commission's humanitarian aid in the region to €33 million for this year.

Polio: Campaign launched for immunization of millions of children

Over 4-million children under the age of 5 will be vaccinated in an immunization campaign launched today by the Angolan government, backed by the United Nations, in 9 of the nation’s 18 provinces.

The nation was proclaimed “free from polio” after no cases were reported for a year. The UNICEF (UN Child’s Fund) in a statement stressed that the new immunization campaign aims to consolidate the “success” of a previous drive to curb a polio outbreak.

In September 2012, UNICEF released the 2012 Progress Report on Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed. The report shows that the number of children dying before the age of 5 has drastically declined over the past two decades.

Angolan women say ‘no’ to discrimination and ‘yes’ to gender equality

High-level women decision makers recently came together in the National Assembly of Angola to endorse the “Harare Call to Action” and discuss how the country will address HIV and gender-based violence. They engaged on issues related to domestic and sexual violence and the inclusion of women in decisions concerning their families, economic development, and sexual and reproductive health and rights.

A year without polio: Angola celebrates victory with a vision to eradicate

LAUNDA, 10 August, 2012 – Today, Angola marks a year without a new wild poliovirus case, moving the world a step closer to the final global goal of eradicating this contagious crippling disease forever.

After a concerted effort to stop polio transmission the number of polio cases dropped from 33 in 2010 to five in 2011 and no cases registered in 2012. Laboratory results have confirmed that the last case of wild poliovirus was a 14-month-old child from Uige Province in the country's Northwest in July 2011.

Brazil Government assists Angola with food security

Reaching the last child: Luanda

A year has passed since Angola saw its most recent case of polio; yet children in the capital, Luanda, continue to be missed

On 7 July 2012, Angola achieved a significant milestone – a year without a single case of polio. Its last case dates to 7 July 2011, from Uige province, and was a new importation from neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). Angola’s last indigenous case due to its re-established transmission virus dates back to March 2011.

Angolan refugees return to unsure future 10 years after war

NAMACUNDE, Angola, June 26, 2012 (AFP) - Thousands of Angolan refugees are trekking home hoping for a new start in life a decade after the end of brutal wars that drove them to neighbouring countries.

On June 30 their refugee status expires so many are returning to Angola, but they face an uncertain future in a country plagued by poverty despite its booming oil-rich economy.

CERF gives $5 million for people affected by drought and food insecurity in Angola

22 June 2012: Angola has recently been impacted by drought in portions of the country due to a significant decrease in rainfall, which has adversely affected the food security of vulnerable households and malnutrition levels. According to Government assessments, an estimated 366,780 households, or some 1.8 million people are affected by drought in 11 provinces. A nutrition survey conducted in 10 provinces in April and March 2012 revealed that more than 533,000 children under age 5 in surveyed areas are affected by malnutrition.

DETAILS OF THE EMERGENCY:

Due to the civil war a considerable number of Angolans fled to neighboring countries like DRC and Zambia looking for safety. Some of them left the country in 1961 at the time of the war of liberation from Portuguese colonization and stayed across borders for more than 40 years.

The Angolan authorities and UNHCR estimate that there are more than 114 000 Angolan refugees still living in neighboring countries who are likely to return when the necessary conditions are created.

Saving children from malnutrition in drought-affected Angola

LUANDA, Angola, 18 June 2012 – One-year-old Liliane Juelma was diagnosed with malnutrition in May.

“She was with diarrhoea, vomiting, breathing problems and fever,” said her mother, Justina Cambovio, 25. “I had to rush with her to the hospital.” Liliane was admitted at the therapeutic feeding center in Huambo, Angola.

KAILA - A group of 141 Angolan refugees that resided at the sprawling Osire refugee camp in the Otjozondjupa Region were yesterday handed over to the Angolan government as part of the tripartite voluntary repatriation.

The group consisted mainly of women and children.
