Govt distributes 300 tonnes of goods to assist people affected by drought

Ondjiva – At least 300 tonnes of several goods, among foodstuff and medicines, were distributed by the Angolan government, through the Ministry of Assistance and Social Reintegration and National Civil Protection Services, aimed to assist the population affected by the drought in the southern Cunene province.

This was said to Angop on Saturday in Ondjiva city by the provincial governor, António Didalelwa, during the distribution act of 181 tones of several products.

Cholera outbreak confirmed in Cabinda

Cabinda - Health authorities in Northern Cabinda have announced the existence of cholera outbreak, due to diharroeas cases in the capital city of the province, Angop has learnt.

This was disclosed by the provincial secretary of health, Carlos Zeca, who explained that this can be confirmed through the laboratory exames done in Luanda.

Carlos Zeca said that the first cases were recorded on April 29, 2013, totalising currently 89 cases with six deaths, being three at home and the rest in hospitals.

Dengue epidemic hits Angola for first time

LUANDA, May 08, 2013 (AFP) - An epidemic of dengue fever has broken out in oil-rich Angola for the first time, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Wednesday.

The outbreak hit the capital Luanda and surrounding areas, WHO country representative Hernando Agudelo Ospina told AFP.

"Since March, Angolan authorities have recorded 128 cases of dengue fever in Luanda province, the first time an epidemic of this disease has hit the country," he said.

"The government has taken the necessary measures to stem the epidemic."

Malaria claims 75 lives in three months

Saurimo - Some 75 people died of malaria in the first quarter of the current year in eastern Lunda Sul province, Angop learnt Thursday.

According to the provincial director general, Hortência Miguel, about 15, 508 cases of disease were registered, a fact that worries the officials.

To reverse the situation, Miguel disclosed that the health authorities are carrying out awareness campaign in the communities centred on measures, prevention and combat the disease

1) Poorly distributed and significantly below average seasonal rainfall has resulted in deteriorating ground conditions since January. This has negatively impacted crops and livestock throughout many parts of southern Angola and northern Namibia.

2) Little to no rainfall since the second dekad of March has been received across portions of eastern Angola, and western Zambia. Late season moisture deficits indicate an early departure of the southern Africa monsoon in the region and may affect crops planted late in the season.

LUANDA, 24 avr 2013 (AFP) - La Haute commissaire pour les droits de l'homme de l'Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), Navi Pillay, a plaidé mercredi pour une enquête sur les violences perpétrées contre les migrants à la frontière entre l'Angola et la République démocratique du Congo (RDC).

"Les allégations de violences et d'abus sexuels contre des femmes traversant cette frontière durent depuis plus de dix ans", a affirmé Navi Pillay lors d'une conférence de presse faisant le bilan d'une visite de trois jours en Angola.

UN calls for inquiry into migrant abuse on border with DRC

LUANDA, April 24, 2013 (AFP) - UN High Commissioner for Refugees Navi Pillay on Wednesday called for an inquiry into reports of violence and sexual abuse of migrants crossing over from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Pillay, speaking in a news conference in the Angolan capital during a three-day visit, said such allegations had been circulating for a decade.

More than 75.000 children vaccinated against polio

Menongue – Some 75. 159 children, under the age of five, were immunised against poliomyelitis in Menongue municipality, south-eastern Kuando Kubango province, during the vaccination campaign held over the last weekend.

This was said to Angop on Tuesday by the director of the local health sector, Carlos António Jonas.

He considered positive the campaign, having into account that figures overcame the expectations, thanks to the role played by the teams involved in the awareness campaigns.

A village free of landmines

Though Angola’s civil war ended in 2002, the legacy of this quarter-century long conflict means that, for much of the population, daily tasks like fetching water or walking to school can end in tragedy.

Luzi is a village in the eastern province of Moxico. Like many communities in this war-torn part of the country, Luzi was heavily fought over by Government and UNITA forces during the war. Residents began to flee in the 1980s as a result, seeking refuge in neighbouring Zambia, and by 1995 the village had been deserted.

Violent storm kills nine in Angola

LUANDA, April 07, 2013 (AFP) - Torrential rains left nine people dead and flooded hundreds of homes in the Angolan capital Luanda, local media reported Sunday.

Four people are still missing after the storm that hit earky Saturday, according to local government spokesman Antonio Resende, quoted by the Angolan news agency Angop.

Landslides also forced the closure of a number of roads.

Rains displace over 200 families in Kamanongue

Luena - At least 239 families have become homeless following the last rains that also destroyed 49 residences in Kamanongue district, eastern Moxico province.

The local administrator, Artur Emanuel Lemos Sapalo, who was speaking to Angop Wednesday, said that the floods destroyed plantation fields and one of the headquarters of the Action Committee of the ruling MPLA party.

Last week, Artur Sapalo voiced concern about ravines that also caused by the rains in the locality, about 52km north of Luena city.

Executive to assist Cunene drought hit peasants

Angola, Ondjiva – The director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in southern Cunene province, Dinis Pedro Pacavira, said Thursday in Ondjiva that measures are being taken to help the peasant populations affected by the drought hitting the region in the 2012/2013 agricultural season.

According to the official, the scarcity of rains currently noted in the province has led to a failure in the agricultural production, which is threatening the harvest of the main crops.

Over a thousand displaced by rains in Malanje province

Malanje - At least three people were killed and 1,730 left homeless following the collapse of 346 homes since September 2012 in 11 of northern Malanje province's 14 municipalities, Angop learned.

This was announced on Tuesday by the local provincial commander of the Fire Department, Venâncio Eduardo, during the 1st ordinary meeting of the organ.

The meeting aimed at making a provisional assesseent of the damage caused by the rains and the response to assist those affected.

Drought threatens harvest in Kuito Kuanavale

Menongue - Rain shortage in Kuito Kuanavale, south-western Kuando Kubango Province, over the last days may hinder harvest in the region, said the local head of the agriculture department, Fernando Tchipengo.

According to the source, this situation may put at risk the harvest of maize and other cereals, although the peasants have received tools for the foment of agricultural production.

The peasants also received seeds of maize, beans, cereals, as well as fertilizers, under the programme of fight against hunger and poverty.

CNIDAH staff attends landmine action training

Huambo – At least 25 staff of the central Huambo province Landmine Action Commission and administration personnel are since Tuesday attending a training programme to improve their landmine action and demining skills.

The four-day CNIDAH course is also intended to improve the staff’s knowledge of the types of the landmines and unexploded ordnances, types of demining operations, landmine risk education and assistance to victims.
