The New Zealand-led assessment team provided the following information, through the OCHA Regional Disaster Response Advisor in Suva, Fiji.

Situation and Damage

1. The 100 families that were made homeless by Cyclone Heta on 5 January, continue to be housed with friends and family. The people of Niue are under considerable stress and the government is providing counselling services as a matter of priority.

The New Zealand-led assessment team provided the following information.

Situation and Damage

1. Cyclone Heta, which struck the Island of Niue to the North-East of New Zealand on 5 January 2004, caused severe damage to the West Coast of the island and in particular the Capital Alofi and the villages of Makefu, Tuapa, Namukulu and Hikutavake on the northwestern side of the island. The Government of Niue, the New Zealand assessment team, the OCHA Regional Disaster Response Advisor for the Pacific, as well as news reports provided the following information.
