  • Two new wild poliovirus (WPV) cases are officially reported this week, both from Nigeria, bringing the total number of WPV cases in 2013 to 26 (compared to 53 at this time last year). 100 millionth person receives lifesaving meningitis vaccine

Affordable, safe, effective vaccine protecting young people from devastating disease

GENEVA, 3 December 2012 – A revolutionary meningitis vaccine will reach the 100 millionth person this week in a region of Africa that has been plagued by deadly epidemics for more than a century. The milestone will take place in northern Nigeria, part of Africa’s “meningitis belt,” where the country is conducting its second seasonal immunisation campaign against the disease.

West and Central Africa: Floods situation (as of 15 Oct 2012)

Since 2007 the number of affected people by floods in West Africa is increasing.
In 2012, heavy rainfalls resulted into widespread floods affecting more than 3 million people in West and Central Africa, especially in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Senegal.
A large part of the affected people are already highly vulnerable due to the Food Security and Nutrition Crisis in the Sahel.

The four-day campaign started today, but instability in some of the target countries could hamper the effort.

The situation

up-to-date as of March 6th

- A virulent meningitis outbreak affects four countries of West Africa. To date, a total of 13,516 cases and 931 deaths have been reported.

- Nigeria is the most affected with 9086 cases and 562 deaths

- Niger reports 2620 cases and 113 deaths.

- Burkina Faso reports 1756 cases and 250 deaths.

- Mali reports 54 cases and 6 deaths.

The epidemic strain A has been identified in Nigeria, Niger and Mali, whereas in Burkina Faso, it is the streptococcus pneumoniae.

Crop prospects and food situation - No. 2, Apr 2008

HIGHLIGHTS

- World cereal production in 2008 is forecast to increase 2.6 percent to a record 2 164 million tonnes. The bulk of the increase is expected to be in wheat following significant expansion in plantings in major producing countries. Coarse grains output is tentatively forecast to remain around the bumper level of last year. Rice production is foreseen to increase slightly reflecting production incentives in several Asian countries. However, much will depend on climatic conditions in the coming months.

Flooding caused 210 deaths in West Africa, said UN

DAKAR, Oct 17, 2007 (AFP) - The worst flooding in 30 years that battered west Africa from July has caused more than 210 deaths and affected more than 785,000 people, a UN humanitarian regional coordinator in Dakar said Wednesday.

"We are now in the after-crisis, with the end of the rains," UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) official Herve Ludovic de Lys said during a press conference.
