FEWS Mozambique Food Security Update Mar 2008 - Food security improving despite hazards

  • Cyclone Jokwe made landfall in Mogincual District in coastal Nampula Province on March 8, 2008, affecting southeastern Nampula and northeastern Zambézia provinces, and causing widespread destruction to housing, infrastructure, and crops, and causing at least nine deaths.

  • Due to Cyclone Jokwe, some 200,000 people in the affected provinces have had their houses, crops, or means of livelihood damaged or destroyed. Households in the areas affected by the cyclone are likely to face acute food shortages.

Mozambique: Shelter assistance for cyclone-affected families

IOM has delivered 1,000 tarpaulins to homeless families in the northern coastal province of Nampula in Mozambique as part of its emergency response to the destruction caused by Cyclone Jokwe.

Following heavy floods in December 2007, Mozambique was again hit by a natural disaster on 7-8 March when Jokwe lashed through its central districts before travelling northwards to Nampula with wind speeds of up to 130 km/h.

8-mln-dollar rebuilding bill after Mozambique cyclone

MAPUTO, March 26, 2008 (AFP) - Mozambique's northeast Nampula province needs eight million dollars to rebuild five districts devastated this month by a cyclone which killed 12 people in the region, an official said Wednesday.

About 30 people died while nearly 90,000 others were displaced throughout the country when Cyclone Jokwe ripped through the southern African country earlier this month.

"An assessment made by the Nampula provincial government indicates that eight million dollars (about five million euros) will be needed to repair and rebuild infrastructure destroyed

Interview - Over 1,300 Mozambique teachers die yearly of AIDS

MAPUTO, March 25 (Reuters) - More than one-sixth of Mozambique's 9,000 teachers are dying of HIV/AIDS each year, lowering the quality of education and jeopardising future development, a government official told Reuters on Tuesday.

Education and Culture Minister Aires Aly said in an interview that the pandemic had become a national emergency, eroding a critical human resource that is key to the poor southern African nation's economic development.

19 March 2008 - CARE is seeking around =A3250,000 to aid families who lost their homes and livelihoods after Cyclone Jokwe struck Mozambique on March 7-8.

The cyclone, which left more than 30,000 households or more than 100,000 people homeless, tore through mangroves, destroying local shrimp production and devastating small agricultural holdings just a month short of harvest.

Mozambique floods: Red Cross assists displaced villagers in Mopeia

The health centre in the camp '24 de Julho', located in the district of Mopeia, is one small, white tent. About 70 people come for treatment daily from the surrounding huts. Two Mozambique Red Cross (CMV) volunteers assist the district doctor, working in shifts. They are attending to the local population in this new settlement, which is just over a month old. It was set up after the nearby Zambeze river burst its banks in early January and farmers living near the river had to flee their flooded land and homes.

Cyclone Jokwe

On 8 March, the Government declared a Red Alert, the highest level for natural disasters, for coastal districts in Nampula province, after tropical cyclone Jokwe hit the northern coast of Mozambique.

Preliminary assessment results indicate that an estimated 12,000 households have been affected by the cyclone in six districts, including Ilha, Mogovolas, Mossuril, Mogincual, Angoche and Moma.

An estimated 800 classrooms were partially or completely destroyed. An estimated 33 health posts and other public buildings were also said to have been damaged.

Mozambique tourist resort struggles to recover from cyclone

VILANKULO, Mozambique, March 18, 2008 (AFP) - Little more than a year after Cyclone Favio ripped through Mozambique's premier tourist resort of Vilankulo, the town still resembles a refugee camp as it struggles to recover.

NEW YORK, USA, 17 March 2008 - The 52nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which concluded recently in New York, could have been just another annual gathering at the United Nations where ambitious commitments are made but soon forgotten - until the next meeting, when they are made yet again.

Mozambique: WFP Operational Update

Mozambique government asks WFP to assist 60,000 victims of Cyclone Jokwe

- The Government of Mozambique has requested the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide emergency food assistance for one month to 60,000 people affected by cyclone Jokwe in the northern province of Nampula.

- WFP plans to begin distributing food assistance to communities affected by Jokwe early next week using existing stocks that were earmarked for other operations. WFP needs US$550,000 to replenish these stocks as soon as possible.

JOHANNESBURG, 17 March 2008 (IRIN) - The United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) will provide emergency food aid for 60,000 people affected by cyclone Jokwe in Mozambique's northern regions.

Bonifácio Antonio, director of the relief coordination department of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC), said at least 13,000 houses were destroyed by the cyclone in the northern provinces of Nampula and Zambezia. "We are still doing our assessments so the numbers in need might increase," he said.

Floods in Mozambique phase 2: TSF leads a humanitarian calling operation

Mozambique has currently been affected by heavy floods along the Zambeze River. A Télécoms Sans Frontières team deployed at the beginning of February, and set up two emergency telecommunication centers in Caïa and Mopeia.
