Why long-term solutions for Malian IDPs hinge on more inclusive peace talks

Since the violent clashes in 2012, where hundreds of thousands of people were displaced, Mali is now working hard to establish peace in a country which is still suffering almost two years on. IDMC has been following the process, but is concerned that the roadmap for peace as agreed in Algiers at the end of last month risks repeating patterns of exclusion.

Mali: I may have lost an arm, but at least I'm alive

Al Hadder (22) was born in Soni Ali Ber, near Gao. He is a welder, and moved to Kidal in the hope of better earnings. After just two months, a single bullet changed everything.

"It was one morning in May 2014, the day fighting started again between the Malian army and armed groups," he explained. The people of Kidal had left their homes to stock up on supplies during a lull in the fighting. Al Hadder had joined them. "I'd gone back to my workshop, because if I didn't work I'd have no money to buy food.

Mali peace talks postponed to September 1

08/13/2014 18:35 GMT

ALGIERS, August 13, 2014 (AFP) - Peace talks between the Malian government and mainly Tuareg rebels will not resume until September 1 after both sides asked for more time to prepare, mediator Algeria said on Wednesday.

The substantive round of negotiations had been due to open in mid-August under a timetable agreed in preliminary talks in Algiers in July.

Its postponement came in response to "the request of the Malian sides who asked for sufficient time to complete their consultations and preparations."
