Kyrgyzstan - Market Assessment: Secondary Data Analysis, April 2013

This market assessment is to a large extent based on secondary data analysis. This includes the analysis of food price and consumer price index data from the National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic, commodity prices from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the APK-Inform Agency and food prices of the WFP Food Price Data Store, analysis of food balance sheets and of various reports and publications on food markets and the Kyrgyz economy.

Overview

In 2012, the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan (RCSK) made maximum efforts and undertook many activities to overcome the consequences of the internal crisis that happened in 2011, and also to restore its image among its partners and the population in general. Although the tension lasted for several months, it has finally been resolved. The concrete activities of restoration, undertaken by the RCSK, were the following.

  • the staff of the National Society were re-instated in their jobs, and acceptable work conditions were ensured;

A new bridge and a safer future

Every spring, melting snow causes rivers across Kyrgyzstan to break their banks, flooding crops, orchards and homes. More than 3,000 rivers throughout the country pose a serious risk to people living along their banks.

“Many actors, many actions, but vulnerable children still at risk of exploitation,” says UN expert

BISHKEK / GENEVA (26 April 2013) – “The full extent of the sale and sexual exploitation of children in the Kyrgyz Republic remains unknown, due to the clandestine and underground nature of the phenomena, the lack of early detection of children victims, and insufficient awareness of child sexual exploitation online,’’ warned United Nations Special Rapporteur Najat Maalla M’jid at the end of her two week visit to the country.

DIPECHO VII Improving preparedness and response abilities to natural disasters in Central Asia

From the 24th to the 27th of April 2013, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Emergency Situations (MoES) and ACTED (Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development) will conduct a three day cross border visit for the Tajik Committee of Emergency Situations (CoES) to their Republican Search and Rescue Centre (Rosso) in Osh. At the event, MoES will officially open their Canine Search and Rescue Centre, funded through ACTED’s DIPECHO VII.

Monthly Price and Food Security Update Kyrgyz Republic, March 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

  • In March 2013, the retail price of wheat flour did not change on a month-on-month basis and remained at high levels. Since June 2012, the price has increased by 56% in rural and 47% in urban areas, and by an average of 52% across the country.

  • The domestic retail price of wheat flour in March was 42% higher than in the same month of last year and only 4% lower than the peak level of early 2011.

New World Bank Project in Kyrgyz Republic Will Help Improve Basic Education

Washington, March 7, 2013 – Today the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved financing of US$ 16.5 million equivalent for the Sector Support for Education Reform Project in the Kyrgyz Republic. US$ 9.1 million is a highly concessional credit, while US$ 7.4 million is a grant.

The objective of this project is to create conditions for improved learning outcomes in basic education. In particular, the project will work to enhance learning process and improve management and accountability of Kyrgyz schools.

Locate Missing Uzbek Refugee

Protect Refugees, Asylum Seekers From Forced Returns

(Bishkek, February 26, 2013) – An Uzbek refugee has been missing from Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek, since February 18, 2013, Human Rights Watch said today. Another asylum seeker from Uzbekistan is in custody while he contests an extradition order issued by the Kyrgyz authorities in violation of international law.

Japan and UNDP Launch 204 Million Japanese Yen (2.2 US Dollars) Project to Strengthen Kyrgyzstan’s Capacity in Countering Disasters with a Focus on Cooperation in Central Asia

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (21 February 2013) – The Government of Japan has granted 204 million Japanese Yen ($2.2 million US Dollars) for a project aimed at strengthening disaster response and risk assessment capacities in Kyrgyzstan. The project will also help facilitate an increased dialogue in the area of disaster risk reduction within Central Asian countries.

ACTED supports local agro initiatives to fight rural poverty

BISHKEK, 31 January 2013 [ACTED News] – A total of 45 village-level agro initiatives across 7 regions of Kyrgyzstan have been selected by ACTED for support with the aim of developing the agro-processing sector. These enterprises were set up and provided with necessary tools and agro materials such as food or wool processing equipment, drying machines and others. In addition, the project facilitated an improved access to raw materials by linking these agro-processing enterprises with supplying farms. Besides, capacities of agro groups have been strengthened through over 170 trainings.

Bundles Of Joy And Food

When Zamira Suyunalieva adopted new-born Ariet who was left at her door, she was already struggling to feed her own children. But on a cold, sunny day in the small village of Kyrk-Kazyk no one seemed happier than Zamira as she brought home a ration of food staples. She knew that her six children will stay fed and healthy throughout the freezing winter.

Kyrk-Kazyk, KYRGYZSTAN – Zamira, thin and worn out from a lifetime of hardship, was overjoyed after receiving such critical relief only a few months after making the life-changing decision of taking in Ariet.

REACHing peace through better local governance

BISHKEK [ACTED News] – The first series of trainings on Better Local Governance started last week in the district of Suzak, Southern Kyrgyzstan. Representatives from local and district level authorities, and newly elected members of local councils have been participating in this training to learn about how to improve governance through better budgeting, accountability and transparency, prioritisation and planning. This will be followed by trainings on how to use the REACH Early Warning Mapping tool and how to write proposals for improved governance and dispute resolution.

UNHCR helps vulnerable people with warm clothes

17 January, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – UNHCR has distributed warm clothing to more than 25,000 vulnerable people from across Kyrgyzstan this season. Almost 30 tons of clothes were distributed to children and adults. State social departments helped UNHCR distribute more than 87,000 items of UNIQLO warm clothes donated by Japan Relief Clothing Centre.

The distribution was organized to provide support for those most at risk who are unable to buy warm clothes, including older people, children, and those with disabilities or chronic illnesses made worse in cold weather.

Tensions between the main ethnic groups of the Ferghana Valley flared again over the weekend, rekindling memories of clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan between Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in June 2010 that left hundreds dead and injured and caused widespread property damage.

Residents of the Uzbek enclave of Soh in southern Kyrgyzstan reportedly attacked Kyrgyz border guards and took Kyrgyz citizens hostage on January 5.

Kyrgyzstan: Extreme winter conditions DREF operation n° MDRKG009

Summary:

Since December 2012, Kyrgyzstan is experiencing unusually cold winter with heavy snowfalls and high precipitation level. According to the data obtained from the National Hydro-meteorological service, current temperatures are the lowest for last 76 years (since 1936). In the northern part of the country temperatures reached minus 30-35 degree Celsius. The National Hydro-meteorological forecast service predicts freezing cold weather in January 2013 and February 2013.

Irrigation rehabilitation supports peace in Southern Kyrgyzstan

In November, ACTED completed construction on two irrigation projects in the South of Kyrgyzstan. Carried out in collaboration with the support of the American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development and the European Union, these activities were part of a national project ‘Conflict Mitigation and Peace Building in Kyrgyzstan’ implemented by the Transition and Rehabilitation Alliance for Southern Kyrgyzstan (TASK).
