Despite halt in deportations, refugees in Israel live in fear

JERUSALEM, May 8 2013 (IPS) - Since Israel secretly deported over 1,000 Sudanese refugees several months ago, sending them back to Sudan and threatening to deport hundreds more Sub-Saharan African refugees, Israeli authorities have suspended this practise in the face of international outrage and condemnation by the United Nations.

Yet refugees, even legal ones, nevertheless continue to leave in fear of deportation as well as abuse amid a climate of racism and frequent attacks against African refugees in Israel.

AI Index: MDE 15/008/2013

Amnesty International has twice written to ministers in the Israeli government to express serious concerns regarding the proposed “Law for Regularizing Bedouin Habitation in the Negev - 2012” and urged the government not to propose the law and to grant legal status and security of tenure to the excluded Bedouin communities in the Negev/Naqab. The organization is now urging members of the Knesset not to pass the law, which the Ministerial Committee on Legislation is due to consider on 21 April 2013 and in the coming weeks.

New project in Israel for refugee and migrant children

On route to Israel refugees are tortured for ransom, in particular in the Sinai.

About 1.5% of those held in the desert are children accompanied by their parents, or single mothers; the vast majority is from Eritrea.

Once arrived in Israel, the Anti-Infiltration Law foresees detention of refugees, including their children for up to three years. Refugees from a so-called “Enemy State”, such as Sudan, may be detained indefinitely, also their children.

Report
IRIN

TEL AVIV, 11 March 2013 (IRIN) - Testimonies of jailed Eritrean migrants and asylum seekers (collected by a local NGO) say officials at Saharonim prison in Israel’s Southern Negev desert are coercing them to sign “voluntary repatriation” forms.

In one of the many testimonies a 28-year-old Eritrean detainee reported being repeatedly visited by a translator telling her to accept deportation to a third country (Uganda).
