Typhoon Chata'an intensifying and heading toward Guam and Saipan

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - Killer Typhoon Chata'an, which has already claimed as many as 39 lives, was intensifying late Thursday and heading toward the US territory of Guam and its major military bases, officials said.

Guam, which is home to more than 150,000 people, was placed on Typhoon Condition One -- the highest level -- by the island's Office of Civil Defence late Thursday.

Chata'an -- "rainy" in Guam's Chamorro language -- is heading straight for Rota Island, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Guam and part of the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Typhoon passes over Guam, death toll in Micronesia still climbing

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - Typhoon Chata'an rolled over the US territory of Guam Friday bringing with it strong winds and heavy rain that shorted the national grid but caused no deaths or casualties.

Civil Defence officials said that 1,600 people were hustled into storm shelters as the deadly storm passed overhead, charting a course north-west toward Japan's Okinawa.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center was forecasting Chata'an to weaken as it moved away from Guam.

At least 37 people were killed when Chata'an pummeled the Micronesian island of Chuuk on Tuesday, with at least another

Guam sees off Typhoon Chata'an

Typhoon Chata'an has passed over the US territory of Guam bringing torrential rain, shaking buildings, and uprooting trees and electricity poles but there were no deaths or injuries.

Officials say the typhoon packed winds gusting up to 195 kilometres per hour and the power supply to most of the island's 150,000 residents was cut off early in the morning.

Earlier this week at least 50 people died and dozens were injured in Micronesia when Chata'an caused heavy rain and mudslides on the island of Chuuk.

A rescue operation continues on Chuuk

Death toll rises as twin typhoons ravage Asia

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - The death toll rose on Friday as atrocious typhoon weather that has wiped out entire families, made thousands homeless and brought havoc to airlines and electricity grids continued to rage across Asia.

Typhoon Rammasun, which has already left thousands of Okinawans without electricity after cutting power lines this week, claimed at least six victims around China's east coast city of Shanghai on Friday.

Five of the dead were killed when a single-room house packed with migrant workers collapsed during the worst of the storm,
