Kenya: Floods Emergency appeal Operation update n°1 - MDRKE025

Appeal target (current): The floods emergency appeal seeks to raise CHF 3,538,548 in cash, kind or services to support Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) to assist an estimated 52,183 beneficiaries for a six months period.

Appeal coverage: 9% So far the appeal has received both hard and soft pledges and commitments from PNS, UN agencies, developmental and private partners.

Helping people by night and day

Although the storm that struck southern Bangladesh luckily caused few fatalities, the downpour that accompanied it has provoked serious flooding and greatly worsened the living conditions of thousands of Bangladeshis. For the past week, the teams of Terre des hommes have been working hard to bring them aid.

In Patharghata, the situation is especially worrying. In this region, where 85% of the population lives from fishing and farming, the fields have been flooded and the retention basins used for the sand filters for drinking water have been destroyed or are contaminated.

DAMASCUS, 19 May 2013– Five- day old Yamen takes a long stretch inside an incubator at a charity hospital in Damascus, while his mother and sister are admiring him happily through the glass door of the unit.

Yamen has in many ways become one of Syria’s smallest hopes amid vicious fighting that has damaged hospitals and taken tens of thousands of lives. His mother remains nearby, ready to breastfeed her youngest child to ensure he gets the best nutritional start to life.

As civil war carries on in Syria and the dynamic security situation continues to deteriorate in the surrounding region, ShelterBox has partnered with Hand in Hand for Syria (HIHS) to get vital humanitarian aid to people internally displaced inside Syria.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), some 6.8 million people have been forced from their homes in the war-torn country having been exposed to violence and unremitting fighting. Many now remain within the borders with no home to go to and no possessions.

Australian specialists to help Samoa rebuild after Cyclone Evan

A team of technical specialists from the Australian Civilian Corps will spend the next 12 months in Samoa to help with its long-term recovery from Cyclone Evan.

Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Dr Stephen Henningham, said the deployment of up to seven specialists will complement the $7 million announced in February for reconstruction efforts following the disaster. This adds to the $2 million in emergency supplies delivered immediately after the cyclone hit in December 2012.

Cette évaluation a permis ainsi de disposer d’informations précises sous les groupes les plus vulnérables, leurs besoins alimentaire et non alimentaire et la période et la durée de l’assistance.

Province Orientale : le service d’hygiène contrôle des toilettes dans les ménages de la cité de Bunia

Le service d’hygiène publique du district de l’Ituri (Province Orientale) procède au contrôle des installations hygiéniques de la cité de Bunia depuis le début du mois de mai.

Ce projet vise à prévenir l’émergence des maladies des mains sales dans cette contrée du pays. La population dénonce, cependant le comportement des agents de la police sanitaire à l’égard des ménages dépourvus de toilettes.

24 children die of diarrhea in Peshawar

Kasese flood victims need 11 million litres of water

The Uganda Red Cross Society has said Kasese flood victims need up to 11 million litres of safe water if disease is to be avoided, amid fears of a cholera outbreak.

Heavy rains that resulted into floods at the beginning of this month destroyed all toilet facilities and this has since affected water sources.

Dr. Bildard Baguma, the under secretary general, Uganda Red Cross Society said any donation was welcome and called upon people and organisations of good will to continue donating.

UNICEF Regional Health Advisor Mahendra Sheth visits a UNICEF vaccination campaign in a camp for Syrian refugees in Iraq.

DOMIZ, Iraq, 22 May 2013 – The Domiz refugee camp, which sits about 60 kilometres from the Syrian border amidst an imposing mountain landscape, was originally built to accommodate 22,000 people. Today it is home to around 40,000 Syrian refugees.

I came to the camp to see first-hand the conditions hundreds of families are living in and to see what UNICEF can do to help improve them.

Distributed Hygienic Bags Again in Baoxing County

On May 20, China Foundation of Poverty Alleviation and Jinde Charity went to Lingguanzhen of Baoxing County to distributed hygienic bags again since the relief supplies distribution on May 9. The bags will be distributed to 9 villages, about 3287 families, 11951 people will benefit from it. The head of the Linguanzhen told our colleagues, “ Thanks for your help after overcoming quite a lot of difficulties. You sent us relief supplies through the danger of landslides, now you came again to send us hygienic bags. Thanks so much for your considerate care.”

Disease kills children, causes miscarriages in camps near Nyala, South Darfur

The sheikh of a camp near Nyala, South Darfur, has told Radio Dabanga the deteriorating heath and sanitary conditions at the site have resulted in the death of four children, and caused four women to miscarry this week. In addition, five children have died of diarrhoea at a camp in the vicinity.

Sheikh Abdul Karim Abakar of Attash camp says that as relief organisations have not yet provided support for the newly displaced to build houses, the four women concerned have only their own clothing to shelter themselves and their children from the sun.
