Unicef Chad Situation Report on the Emergency in Tissi (April – May 2013)

Highlights

Chad is currently facing simultaneous, acute emergencies which are stretching capacity and current funding levels. UNICEF and partners have responded well to the most recent refugee and returnee influxes but we remain vigilant given current political turmoil in neighboring countries as well as a high risk for epidemics.

Syria Crisis Financial Briefing: UN announces largest ever humanitarian appeal for Syria

Revised requirements and new appeals

On Friday, 7 June 2013, the United Nations announced a new appeal for Syria – the largest ever humanitarian appeal to date, with total requirements reaching US$5.2 billion for 2013. The UN has in fact revised upwards its two main appeals, the Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP) for people inside the country, and the Syria Regional Response Plan (RRP) for refugees in the region.

WFP Publishes Detailed Data On Spending Through IATI Transparency Initiative

WFP has joined the growing group of governments, NGOs and aid organizations that publish detailed data on activities and spending using common standards established by the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI).

ROME -- In a step which underlines the organization’s commitment to accountability, WFP this week became the 150th publisher of open, IATI-standard data which can be viewed through the IATI website. WFP joins other UN organizations such as Unicef, UN Women and UNDP on the expanding list.

Revised Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP) January - December 2013

The events in Syria since March 2011 have resulted in significant humanitarian needs. Compared with the initial 2013 Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP), launched in December 2012, the crisis has further intensified and expanded into most parts of the country. Civilians across the country are bearing the brunt of the on-going violence with rising numbers of people killed, injured, displaced or otherwise affected in their living conditions.

ADDIS ABABA, 6 June 2013 (IRIN) - Ten years ago, a shipping container was converted into Ethiopia’s first HIV treatment centre, in Addis Ababa, the capital. Created in response to a dramatic rise in new HIV infections and AIDS -related deaths, the centre offered the only hope for HIV-positive Ethiopians, who had to pay to access the life-prolonging antiretroviral therapy (ART).

South Sudan Humanitarian Bulletin 27 May - 2 June 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) gave aid agencies in South Sudan US5.4 million to strengthen life-saving medical capacity and transport services to assist people affected by ongoing hostilities in Jonglei.

  • Insecurity persisted in Jonglei State’s Pibor with most civilians displaced.

  • Aid organizations visited Boma and Mewun, Jonglei State to assess the situation, three weeks after they temporarily suspended operations due to insecurity

Democratic Republic of Congo: Humanitarian situation (January 2012 - April 2013)

Since 2012 the DRC has witnessed a constant increase in the number of internally displaced people, up from 1.7 million in December 2011 to more than 2.6 million in April 2013. The east of the country has remained very unstable due to the presence of various armed groups and militias.

Refugees in Lebanon are scattered across the country with the largest concentrations of registered refugees living in North Lebanon (50%) and the Bekaa Valley (38%). There are no camps in Lebanon, but most refugees are hosted or living in rented spaces, and 13% live in collective shelters and tented settlements.

Is Aid to South Africa Drying Up?

JOHANNESBURG, May 17 2013 (IPS) - Commentators and business leaders in South Africa believe that the recent announcement of an end to the United Kingdom’s aid programme to South Africa may be the start of a new trend to cut back on aid to this country, and possibly to the rest of Africa.

“This British announcement was not entirely unexpected,” Neren Rau, the head of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told IPS.
