The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (Central Office)-Department of Environment and Natural Resources (MGB-DENR) conducted geohazards (landslide and flood) assessment and mapping (1:10,000 scale) of areas within the municipality of Nabunturan on March 11 to 19, 2013. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Office No. 11 (MGB-DENR XI) conducted a landslide assessment and mapping (1:10,000 scale) of areas within the municipality of Monkayo, Compostela Valley Province on May 14, 2012 until June 8, 2012. The assessment is in line with the government’s efforts aimed at reducing, if not, totally mitigating the destructive effects and impacts of natural hazards on the populace. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Office No. 11 (MGB-DENR XI) conducted a landslide assessment and mapping (1:10,000 scale) of areas within the municipality of Manay, Davao Oriental Province on July 4, 2012 until July 28, 2012. The assessment is in line with the government’s efforts aimed at reducing, if not, totally mitigating the destructive effects and impacts of natural hazards on the populace. Leading the geohazard assessment team are Ms. Abigail June L. Agus, geologist from the MGB regional office.

Due to the effects of Typhoon Pablo in some parts of Region XI, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Office No. 11 (MGB-DENR XI) prioritized the conduct of landslide and flood assessment and mapping (1:10,000 scale) of areas within the Municipality of Boston, Davao Oriental on February 11 to 26, 2013 being one of the worst hit areas. The assessment is in line with the government’s efforts aimed at reducing, if not, totally mitigating the destructive effects and impacts of natural hazards on the populace.

  1. Initial Report re Flashflood in Damulog, Bukidnon
  • On or about 4:00 PM 10 May 2013, a flash flood occurred due to continuous heavy rains in Sitio Dansolihon, Brgy. Composteia, Damulog, Bukidnon.

  • According to investigation, four children were playing in a dead creek in the said area when the flash flood happened which resulted to the death of a certain Raymart Ruta, 5 y/o, after being carried away by the flood

ACTIONS TAKEN:

  • Damulog Rescue Team conducted flood assessment.

II. EFFECTS

On the day of the ash explosion, there were a total of twenty-one (21 reported multi-national tourists and local climbers within the six (6) km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). Of this number, five (5) were reported dead, nine (9) were injured, and seven (7) were unharmed.

On or about about 1:40 PM, 09 May 2013 the five (5) cadavers had been brought down to TOG 5 by two (2) helicopters and were immediately transported to a local funeral parlor.

As of reporting time, a total of thirteen (13) casualties are presumed dead (5) injured (8); while one (1) individual is missing and two (2) are reportedly unharmed. Among the presumed dead individuals were four (4) German nationals and a Filipino tour guide.

The missing Thai National was rescued alive but suffered burn injuries and broken right arm while the other five (5) missing unidentified individuals were already identified and found unharmed.

PHL Donates US$ 50,000 for Rehabilitation of Myanmar’s Rakhine State

The Philippines donated US$50,000.00 to the Government of Myanmar for the rehabilitation of Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex G. Chua, accompanied by Third Secretary and Vice Consul Bryan Jess T. Baguio, handed over the donation letter to Border Affairs Minister Lt. Gen. Thet Naing Win at the Ministry of Border Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw on May 02.

The Philippines made the donation in light of its close ties with Myanmar and in recognition of the urgent humanitarian needs of the affected communities in Rakhine State.

1. INITIAL REPORT RE ARMED ENCOUNTER IN SPALAY CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL

SITUATION OVERVIEW

• On May 3, 2013 at about 9:00 PM, an undetermined number of armed lawless elements suspected to be NPAs, forcibly entered Philex Mining Corporation located at Sitio Umas, Brgy. Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental burning two (2) employees bunkhouse/barracks, one (1) unit Kubota tractor with drilling machine, one (1) unit computer, one (1) unit generator set, an ICOM radio and other personal belongings of employees.
