Indonesia: Five years after the Tsunami - Continuing the commitment to recontruction, MDF Progress Report, Dec 2009

Executive Summary

December 26, 2009 marks five years since the earthquake and tsunami that caused unprecedented devastation and loss of life across Aceh and Nias. The Multi Donor Fund for Aceh and Nias (MDF) was formed in response to the Government of Indonesia's (GOI) efforts to coordinate and mobilize donor support for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the affected areas. The MDF pools approximately US $ 685 million in grant resources provided by 15 donors to support implementation of the government's rehabilitation and reconstruction program.

Indonesia: European Commission provides 750,000 euro strategic support to the local elections in Aceh

The European Commission (EC) launched today (20/4) a project in support of the local elections in Aceh.
With an EC grant funding of 750,000 euro, the "EC support to Aceh Local Elections (ALES)" project will provide strategic technical assistance to the Aceh Independent Elections Commission (KIP) with the aim of ensuring sustainable institutional capacity to conduct recurring free and fair elections.

Support will also be provided for the training of election poll workers, voter information and education as well

Commission provides additional €118 million to help rebuild Indonesia's Aceh province

The European Commission has approved a further contribution of €118 million to support rehabilitation and long-term reconstruction in Indonesia's Aceh province following the Tsunami. Indonesia: After the tsunami - rebuilding Aceh's health service

The noisy hustle and bustle of daily life goes on around her, but Nurhayati patiently crouches on the floor of Lapang Barracks and ticks off the items on her checklist. She's dressed in her crisp blue and white community health worker's uniform, because today she's paying official house calls to residents in one of Aceh's many camps set up after the tsunami.
"I'm collecting data on any health problems in the barracks," explains Nurhayati. "I'm a displaced person myself so I know what people are going through. Their problems are my problems and I want to help."

Aceh: Commission releases €4 million to support the peace process

More aid on the way for tsunami victims

The European Commission keeps its promises. In January 2005 the President of the Commission Mr Barroso assured 473 million euro for 2005 and 2006 to help countries affected by the Tsunami. In order to deliver on this commitment the Commission today proposed 98 million euro in an amending budget and 180 million euro in the proposed budget for 2006. The 278 million euro is meant to help the reconstruction of Asian Tsunami affected regions.

Brussels, 20 April, 2005 - The tsunami of 26 December 2004 was one of the worst natural disasters in recorded history. Large tracts of the islands of Sri Lanka and the Maldives as well as coastal zones of Indonesia, India and Thailand were devastated. The true scale of the tragedy is now clear, with some 300,000 dead and a further million people displaced. Europe's (European Commission and Member States) response to the Tsunami crisis was immediate and generous with contributions amounting to around € 1.5billion (making it the largest donor to the appeal).
