Burma: Rakhine State IDP Camps at Risk of Monsoon Flooding (as of 26 April 2013)

Displaced Persons at Risk At least 140,000 displaced Muslim Rohingya and Buddhist Rakhine are nervously awaiting the beginning of the rainy season, which runs from May/June to October. Some 68,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Rakhine State currently reside in 14 camps and informal settlements on land at serious risk of ooding. Flooding could contaminate water sources and accelerate the spread of water and vector-borne diseases.

Syria: Cultural Heritage Sites at Risk (as of 11 Apr 2013)

Conflict, violence, and internal displacements of Syrians are endangering archaeological sites, historic buildings, monuments, and collections of objects. This map identifies the locations of over 1000 well-preserved cultural heritage sites and museums. It also presents counts of those sites inside and outside the areas of conflict and displacement. The pie chart shows that, of the sites and museums identified, nearly all are at risk.

World Humanitarian Day 2012: Aid Workers in Harm’s Way (Aug 15 2012)

Since 2001, the number of aid worker victims who have been killed, wounded/injured, or kidnapped in security incidents has risen dramatically. The majority of these victims are national staff aid workers. Aid workers can be the targets of combatants or collateral casualties caught in the crossre of conicts, or they can be victims of criminal attacks, robberies, or kidnapping for ransom.

World: People in Crisis; Key Issues and Trends (Aug 17 2012)

4.3 million people newly displaced sets new displacement in a single year at a historic high. In 2011, there were 3.5 million new internally displaced persons (IDPs), a 20% increase from 2010, and more than 800,000 new refugees, the highest number in more than a decade. The countries experiencing the highest levels of displacement were: Côte d’Ivoire, Libya, South Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Yemen. Due to new conicts and humanitarian emergencies, the total number of people forcibly displaced worldwide exceeds 42 million for the fth consecutive year.

Afghanistan: Spring Floods Wreak Havoc March – May 2012

A number of floods hit several regions of Afghanistan this spring. Flooding in parts of the north, especially in Sar-e Pul Province, was particularly severe with tens of thousands of individuals displaced, livestock killed, and homes destroyed. The Afghan government is providing the majority of relief with additional support from the UN and NGOs. Aid organizations estimate that flood victims may require humanitarian assistance for several months.
