Albania: USG Assists Displaced Following Severe Flooding

SHKODRA, DECEMBER 15, 2010 Today, the U.S. Ambassador to Albania, Alexander Arvizu, visited the flooded region of Shkodra and met with officials at the Government of Albania's disaster operations center to discuss their emergency assistance operations. In his remarks to the media, the Ambassador affirmed the U.S. Government's commitment to support the Albanian people during both the emergency and long-term recovery efforts.

USAID assists Albanians displaced from severe flooding in Northern Albania

SHKODRA, JANUARY 13, 2010 - In response to the emergency situation created by flooding in northern Albania, the United States Embassy announced today a donation of $50,000 in emergency assistance to flood victims. The funds are being disbursed through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)'s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance to the Albanian Red Cross for the purchase and distribution of blankets, food, hygiene kits, and other emergency relief supplies to affected populations to an estimated 5,000 people in northern Albania.

USAID, U.S. Embassy response to H1N1 (Swine) flu in Albania

TIRANA, AUGUST 4, 2009

In cooperation with Albania's Ministry of Health, the Institute of Public Health, and UNICEF, USAID/Albania and the U.S. Embassy in Tirana launched a public information campaign to raise awareness on how Albanians can protect themselves from contracting the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu. Since its discovery in May, swine flu, an illness that mainly affects the respiratory system and is transmitted by person to person contact, has spread rapidly across the globe. According to the World Health Organization the virus is classified as a global pandemic.

USAID assists Albanians displaced in accidental explosions

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), provided $50,000 to meet the immediate needs of Albanians affected by the accidental munitions explosions at a military facility near the capital city of Tirana.

On March 15 and 16, a series of explosions at an Albanian military ammunition storage facility in Gerdec, 10 miles southeast of Tirana, killed 21 people and injured 250 others. USAID provides an additional $175,000 to help fight wildfires in Albania

Washington, DC -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today that it will provide $3 million to help support youth development in the Balkans. Through a partnership with the International Youth Foundation (IYF), USAID's contribution will fund the Balkan Children and Youth Foundation (BCYF), a partner of the IYF global network. Minority Issues

According to KFOR, the Roma, a minority gypsy group in Kosovo perceived by ethnic Albanians to be sympathetic to Serbs during the recent conflict, are adamant about leaving Kosovo for a third country, saying they fear for their safety if they remain.

On September 20, an estimated 800-900 members of a Roma group began walking from their temporary camp near Obilic
