The rainfall situation for Chad improved during July with heavy rains moving into the Sahelian agroclimatic zone. These rains will create soil conditions necessary for an excellent recessional agriculture season. If conditions remain favorable, the Sahelian zone could have an above-average harvest for the second year in a row. In some areas, however, rivers swelled in mid-July and caused seasonal disruptions in road transportation and abnormal flooding that damaged crops (see flood situation box).

USAID Administrator to visit earthquake devasted Turkey

WASHINGTON, D.C. - J. Brady Anderson, Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will leave for Turkey Sunday to see first hand the devastation caused by last week's earthquake that has claimed more than 12,000 lives and left 600,000 people homeless.

As the President's International Disaster Assistance Coordinator, Anderson will tour the areas hardest hit by the earthquake including Izmit, Yalova, and Golcuk. He will meet with the Turkish Prime Minister and other government officials and U.S. Embassy

USAID'S Miami-Dade urban search and rescue team returns home

Washington, DC - Roy Williams, Director of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Mayor Alex Penelas of Miami-Dade County, and Fire Chief Dave Paulison will commend the courageous efforts of the Miami-Dade Urban Search and Rescue team upon their arrival home from Turkey.

The 70- member team with six search canines arrived in Turkey on Saturday, August 21 and worked 24 hours each day in a tremendous effort to remove victims trapped in the rubble caused by the earthquake.
