South Sudan Emergency humanitarian situation report Issue 11, 08 April – 28 April 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

In this reporting period WHO,

  • Participated in a field visit to Internally Displaced Persons camp in Jaac, North Aweil county Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

  • Supported the State Ministry of Health (SMOH), Jonglei state with medical evacuations of three injured patients from Pibor county and surgical management of the gunshot wound casualties from communal clashes in the county.

  • Supported all the State Ministries of Health to plan for the National Immunization Days for polio.

Floods in the WHO European Region: Health Effects and their Prevention

How flooding affects health

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the WHO European Region, occurring in 50 of the 53 countries in the WHO European Region in the past decade. More frequent, extreme rainfall is projected; it may result in more floods, of greater intensity and various types. Flooding has extensive and significant effects on health, spanning the short and long terms and ranging from drowning and injuries to infectious diseases and mental-health problems.

The United Republic of Tanzania launches the presidential call to action on nutrition

“Good nutrition is the foundation for sustainable development, play your part” was the call made to all present during the launch of presidential call to action on nutrition on 16th May, 2013. His Excellency, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania was the guest of honor in the well-attended event held at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Dar es Salaam.

Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin - Disease early warning system and response in Pakistan, Volume 4, Issue 19

Highlights

Epidemiological week no. 19 (5 to 11 May 2013)

• Measles: This week a total of 37 alerts investigated. 403 measles cases were reporting from 17 districts.
Vitamin‐A drops provided to all the suspects and district health teams took action to improve vaccination in affected areas.

• 64 districts and 1758 health facilities have reported to DEWS this week 19, compared with 66 districts with 1913 health facilities shared weekly data in week 18, 2013 to the Disease Early Warning System (DEWS).

Highlights

• Possible cyclone threat to Chittagong division (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Noakhali coastal belts) in Bangladesh and Rakhine State in Myanmar and may hit these districts on late Tuesday/Wednesday.

• Some information channels predict it could be affecting with the same magnitude of Cyclone Nargis (category 4).

• Discussion and preparation between MoHs and EHA in WCO BAN and WCO MMR are underway.

Wild poliovirus in Somalia

11 May 2013 -An investigation has been launched into a preliminary report of the detection of a wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in the Banadir region of Somalia. This is the first WPV to be reported from Somalia since 25 March 2007. The virus was isolated from specimens collected on 21 April 2013 from a 32-month-old girl, who became ill due to acute flaccid paralysis on 18 April 2013, and from specimens collected from 3 of her close contacts.

There are high risks of communicable diseases, floods and drought, low access to safe drinking water, food insecurity, and poor sanitation. Environmental factors contribute to the spread of diseases such as water and vector-borne diseases like diarrhoeal diseases, hepatitis, malaria and dengue fever.

GENEVA/NEW YORK, 13 May 2013 – Some 2.4 billion people – one-third of the world’s population – will remain without access to improved sanitation in 2015, according to a joint WHO/UNICEF report issued today.
