Like a thief in the night, Tropical Storm Washi (also known as Sendong) has caused flash floods in the southern Philippines and taken the lives of an estimated 1,000 people while heavily damaging infrastructure.

Food and water emerged as the most urgent needs as entire villages were swept away and water networks destroyed in the hardest-hit provinces in Mindanao and Visayas regions. Many people were left with only the mud-drenched clothes on their backs, as they mourned those who did not survive.

Geneva (ICRC) – Abkhaz and Georgian participants in a coordination mechanism set up to clarify what happened to people unaccounted for in connection with the 1992-1993 armed conflict met on 13 December in Zugdidi, western Georgia, under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

"There are clear signs that the participants are seeking to achieve progress and looking for workable solutions," said Megan Bassendale, an ICRC forensic adviser who attended the meeting.

Red Cross condemns lack of respect for its emergency services

Kinshasa (Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo/ICRC/International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) – On 26 November, a volunteer of the Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was attacked near a first-aid post in the N'Djili municipality of Kinshasa by unidentified assailants. The red cross emblem was clearly visible on his uniform. He died of his wounds at a hospital in Kinshasa on 7 December.

Kinshasa (Croix-Rouge de la République démocratique du Congo / CICR / Fédération internationale) – Le 26 novembre dernier, un volontaire de la Croix-Rouge de la République démocratique du Congo en mission à proximité d'un poste de secours de la Société nationale a été agressé par des personnes non identifiées dans la commune de N'Dijili, Kinshasa, alors que l’emblème de la croix rouge était clairement visible sur son uniforme. Il a succombé à ses blessures à l'Hôpital général de référence de la Gombe, le 7 décembre.
