Helping Georgia clear mines and unexploded ordnance

On 20th February 2013 a closing ceremony to mark the end of the Georgia III NATO Trust Fund/Partnership for Peace Project was held at NATO HQ. The event was hosted by the Georgian Minister of Defence, Mr. Irakli Alasania with 21 Ambassadors amongst the 60 guests. The project helped to clear mines and unexploded ordnance in Georgia and to improve medical rehabilitation for victims injured by explosions.

Overnight temperatures routinely dip below freezing, and the treeless countryside offers little in the way of firewood for the poorly-clothed refugees and their children.

Developing remote-controlled robots to clear roadside bombs

Secure roads, safe lines of communication and freedom of movement are crucial for the safety of both soldiers and civilians in Afghanistan. Several Allies are working together to identify the best equipment for route clearance operations, including remote-controlled robots. This is one of a package of multinational ‘Smart Defence’ projects launched at NATO’s Chicago Summit in 2012.

Building capacity to clear unexploded ordnance in Georgia

Following the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia, Georgia faced the task of rebuilding affected areas of the country. On top of the reconstruction efforts, Georgia faced an additional problem: legacy minefields and extensive unexploded ordnance contamination. In response to this, Georgia turned to NATO for help. At the government’s request, NATO designed and funded a project focused on strengthening the Georgian Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company.

Concept was born out of CJOS COE‟s participation to the U.S. Navy relief efforts following the earthquake in Haiti reinforced with experience in humanitarian operations in Somalia and Sudan. This operation clearly underlined the pressing requirement for better mechanisms and processes to improve the coordination between the military and humanitarian entities working together to assist victims of natural or industrial disasters during Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

Computer classes help Afghan government prepare for future

ISAF donates medical supplies to aid burn victims

KABUL, Afghanistan (July 6, 2012) — Medical professionals from International Security Assistance Force locations across Afghanistan banded together to donate medical supplies to the Isteqlal Hospital here for the treatment of burn victims.

The supplies were gathered and donated in response to a July 4 gas explosion that left many Afghans in critical condition.

She rose to her position through sheer guts, and has held it now for seven years with a single-minded determination to slice through barriers at every step.

NATO conducted the campaign for Libya with unprecedented care and precision and to a standard exceeding that required by international humanitarian law. The mission was fully consistent with the United Nations mandate and saved countless lives.

NATO did everything possible to minimise risks to civilians, but in a complex military campaign, that risk can never be zero. We deeply regret any instance of civilian casualties for which NATO may have been responsible.

Daykundi province reaches out for unity across Afghanistan

NILI, Afghanistan — Members of the High Peace Council from Kabul traveled to Nili to meet with Daykundi’s Provincial Peace Council and local leaders, and formally integrate them into the national peace planning.

A committee of nine government officials flew in from Kabul, including members of parliament, the National Department of Security, and the National Directorate of Security, to meet with Governor Qurban Ali Oruzgani and other local leaders, to send a message of peace to the rest of the country.

NATO conference discusses women, peace and security in the Middle East and North Africa

Leading NATO officials and female representatives from Tunisia, Jordan, Libya, Yemen, Morocco and Rwanda discussed progress made in promoting the role of women in peace and security at a conference from 28-29 March.

The aim of the conference was to review the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 in the wake of the first anniversary of the start of the Arab Awakening.

Explosive ordnance disposal exercise displays transition progress

Afghan culture is based primarily on trust. To build an effective partnership with the people in Afghanistan is to earn their trust. The same can be said about working with explosives, as the team relies on an enormous amount of trust.

In a successful operation on 15 March, members of the Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops safely disposed of unexploded ordnance.

NATO-sponsored project to help secure dangerous munitions in Tajikistan

Fifteen years after the end of a civil war, Tajikistan is left with thousands of tonnes of munitions insecurely stored in makeshift storage sites across the country. Aside from the many known munitions caches, several more lie undiscovered, posing a major security threat to the Tajik people. A Partnership Trust Fund project, officially launched on 31 January, will soon help Tajikistan to counter this threat.

New Director makes rapid improvements to Afghan orphanages

29-year old Sayed Abdullah Hashemi, an orphan himself, has taken over the Director of Orphanages position in Afghanistan's Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. In just 7 months he has dramatically turned around conditions in large Kabul orphanages and is now trying to bring better conditions to all of Afghanistan.

Hashimi explains his commitment to his work: “When I was six months old my father and then my mother died. Growing up was difficult and early on I had the desire to help people who faced difficulties, wherever they are,” he says.
