From surviving to thriving: small-scale farmers increase incomes and food security in Guatemala

In eastern Guatemala, farmers in the "dry corridor" are accustomed to eking out a living in adverse circumstances. Most small farms barely produce enough to eat, with little or no surplus to sell. The quality of the main crops—beans and maize—is uneven, and farmers lack the basic inputs to better their yields. The 2012 drought hit the farmers in this region especially hard, with some areas reporting losses of up to 90 percent.
