  1. Myanmar - Inter-communal violence displaced approximately 1,400 people in Lashio, Shan state on 29 May. Since then many have returned home, however nearly 440 people remain in two sites as of 2 June. The Gov., private donors and humanitarian agencies are providing assistance.

  1. Bangladesh - Tropical Storm Mahasen struck southern districts on 16 May. The Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) is ongoing and preliminary findings are due to be presented tomorrow (21 May). 17 people have reportedly lost their lives, JNA results will provide a better understand of the impact of the cyclone on shelter and livelihoods.

Marshall Islands + 5 others
Asia-Pacific Region 7 - 13 May, 2013, Natural Disasters and Other Events being monitored by the OCHA Regional Office for the Asia-Pacific

  1. Marshall Islands - The Government has issued an elevated state of disaster due to the severe drought in northern parts of the country, affecting between 3,200 and 5,000 people. Assessments are ongoing and an UNDAC team has arrived in country. WASH is the priority as there is a priority need for safe drinking water.

PNG floods at crisis point

The international aid agency Oxfam says the flooding situation in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province has now reached crisis point.

Seven people have been confirmed dead and about 11,500 people have been affected by flooding along the Sepik River.

Phillippe Allen, Oxfam Australia's associate country director for PNG, says although flooding is a regular occurrence, water levels have risen excessively in this wet season.

PNG flooding threatens food supplies

Food supplies are dwindling for more than 5000 villagers in Central Bougainville as a result of continuous heavy rain.

Food gardens in the coastal village of Rorovana have been washed away and an appeal has gone out for emergency government assistance.

Regional disaster coordinator, Franklin Lacui, told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat a long term plan to help the villagers relocate has been put into action, but decisions are yet to be made on the immediate issue of food aid.

Asia-Pacific region 5 -11 February, 2013 - Natural disasters and other events being monitored by the OCHA Regional Office for the Asia-Pacific

  1. Solomon Islands - An magnitude 8 earthquake struck, triggering a tsunami affecting the Santa Cruz islands (Temotu Province). Initial reports say 700 HHs are affected, 3.500 people are displaced and 9 people killed. A state of emergency has been declared and the GoSL is leading the response with support from Int'l NGOs and the Red Cross.

Papua New Guinea: Floods & Landslides - Information Bulletin n° 1

Summary

Heavy rainfall since November 2012 has resulted in floods and landslides affecting homes, properties, vegetation, gardens, water sources and infrastructure. Thousands of people are affected in several provinces. The PNGRCS has undertaken initial assessments and are distributing relief goods.

US gives aid for flood victims in Papua New Guinea

The United States Agency for International Development is giving the Papua New Guinea Red Cross 50,000 US dollars to support disaster relief efforts in Morobe and Oro provinces.

Resource concerns delay PNG flood response

Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Centre says it lacks both the staff and logistical capacity to respond quickly to natural disasters throughout the country.

Tens of thousands of people have been affected by flooding in PNG's Morobe, Oro and parts of the Highlands provinces.

Director Martin Mose told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program it cannot do rapid assessment and response as it lacks the capacity to help those people affected.

"We are well behind time now," he said.

  1. Philippines - TC Bopha (Pablo) struck the southern Philippines in early December. The risk of floods and landslides due to heavy rains persists in typhoon-affected areas hampering humanitarian activities. The revised Action Plan was launched in Manila on 25 January asking for US$76 million. A low pressure area continues to affect areas in Mindanao causing flash floods and a landslide affecting nearly 40,000 people.

27,000 still stricken weeks after PNG floods

27,000 people in PNG's Oro Province still need food and water after severe flooding, the Red Cross says.

The Red Cross says more than 27,000 flood-affected people in Papua New Guinea's Oro Province remain in desperate need of basic items like food and clean drinking water.

Floods hit the region last November.

The humanitarian agency says widespread flooding cause damage to food gardens, homes and other vital infrastructure.

This new and important document is part of a suite of reforms flowing from the 2011 Independent Review of Aid Effectiveness. Its purpose is to inform Cabinet discussion of the four-year budget strategy outlined in the Comprehensive Aid Policy Framework and report on the aid program’s performance against the Framework.

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

Global emergency overview Snapshot, 5-12 November 2012

Both Guatemala and Myanmar were affected by earthquakes during the reporting period. On 7 November, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck the pacific coast of Guatemala, affecting more than 600,000 people followed by a second quake of 6.2 magnitude on 11 November. There were no immediate reports of major infrastructural damage caused by the second earthquake. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake which struck in Myanmar on 10 November, meanwhile, damaged infrastructure but the full extent of the impact remains unclear.
