Niger/Mali – Cholera (ECHO Daily Flash, 17/05/2013)

A cholera outbreak has been reported in the Tilabery region of Niger, with 198 cases and six deaths reported so far, including cases in the refugee camps and Niamey. The Nigerien Ministry of Health has officially declared an epidemic.

There is a high risk that the disease could spread along the Niger river, and nine suspected cases have been reported in the Gao region of Mali.

Epidemiological week no. 19 (5 to 11 May 2013)

• Measles: This week a total of 37 alerts investigated. 403 measles cases were reporting from 17 districts.
Vitamin‐A drops provided to all the suspects and district health teams took action to improve vaccination in affected areas.

• 64 districts and 1758 health facilities have reported to DEWS this week 19, compared with 66 districts with 1913 health facilities shared weekly data in week 18, 2013 to the Disease Early Warning System (DEWS).

Three more kids die of measles

LAHORE, May 13: Measles claimed lives of three children while 82 more cases were reported in the provincial capital on Monday.

Eight-month-old Talha, six-year-old Naeema and four-year-old Saif died at Children’s Hospital, a source said.

Two victims belonged to Chungi Amar Sidhu and the third one to a nearby Kot Lakhpat locality.

Earlier, the measles-related deaths of three babies and dozens of cases were also reported in same areas which indicate that the disease has mostly hit there.

Punjab praised for meeting vaccination targets

LAHORE, May 14: The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF have commended efforts of the Punjab Health Department for providing anti-measles vaccine coverage to the 95 per cent of the target children in Lahore.

The seven-day campaign was launched in the provincial capital by the health department on April 30 which was later extended for another two days. The health teams were to reach 2.6 million target children for vaccination in the period.

HONIARA, Solomon Islands, May 15 2013 (IPS) - City and health authorities in the Solomon Islands, located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, are calling for effective and consistent urban waste management as they battle to control a serious outbreak of dengue fever, the world’s fastest spreading vector-borne viral disease, which was identified in the country in February.
