Thousands evacuated as Philippine volcano threatens to erupt

LEGAZPI, September 16, 2014 (AFP) - Thousands of people living near the Philippines' most active volcano began leaving their homes on Tuesday as lava trickled down its slopes and authorities warned of a dangerous eruption.

Mayon, a volcano famed in equal parts for its near-perfect cone and brutal volatility, had begun to stir again with magma rising to the top and small earthquakes rattling deep inside, authorities said.

De acuerdo al monitoreo realizado por el Comité Técnico Científico de Monitoreo Permanente del Volcán Ubinas, observaron en los últimos días los parámetros de monitoreo, así como el registro de las emisiones de ceniza, indican que desde el día 13 de abril, la actividad volcánica se incrementó notablemente. Los parámetros del proceso eruptivo son comparados a los registrados en la erupción del año 2006.

Mud Volcano Eruption Damages Farmland in Kyaukphyu

RANGOON — A mud volcano eruption in western Burma’s Arakan State has damaged more than 200 acres of farmland in Kyaukphyu Township, according to locals.

The mud volcano near Yaukchaung Village began spewing mud on Aug. 31, immediately inundating 30 acres of surrounding farmland. The mud has since flowed into another 170 acres of land, mostly rice paddy, said Aung Saw Thein, a local of Kyaukphyu, which is on Ramree Island.

“We still don’t know the exact acreage of farmland affected by the volcano eruption,” said Aung Saw Thein.

Volcán Tungurahua reanima actividad con explosiones y flujos de lava

El volcán Tungurahua reanimó esta mañana su actividad, después de un corto lapso de silencio, con explosiones y flujos de piroclástos (rocas incandescentes) en los bordes de la cumbre.

El volcán "está saliendo de su periodo de silencio", en los que se notó una bajada de explosiones y en su actividad sísmica, "y ha producido en esta tarde unas "dos explosiones por hora", indicó a Efe la vulcanóloga Patricia Mothes, del Instituto Geofísico (IG) de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional.

Overview

Fifty-nine allocations were made by the DREF during the first six months of 2014 for a total of CHF 9,166,345. Just under 70 per cent of the amount of allocations were made as grants to support response to small or medium-scale disasters, referred to as DREF operations. Twelve emergency appeals received start-up funding loans. The allocations supported response to 55 different operations by 45 National Societies.

Dramatic Papua New Guinea volcano quietens

RABAUL, August 30, 2014 (AFP) - A volcano which has erupted in Papua New Guinea was Saturday spewing fragments from its crater and rumbling loudly, but its activity appeared to be subsiding, a seismologist said.

Mount Tavurvur, which destroyed the town of Rabaul when it erupted simultaneously with nearby Mount Vulcan in 1994, came to life again early Friday, with rocks and ash erupting from its centre.

As PNG volcano settles, cleanup gets underway

Mt Tavurvur erupted in the early hours of Friday morning spewing ash and rock onto nearby villages, destroying crops and contaminating water supplies.

There have been no reports of injuries or major infrastructure damage.

SYDNEY, August 29, 2014 (AFP) - A volcano erupted Friday in eastern Papua New Guinea, spewing rocks and ash into the air, forcing the evacuation of local communities and international flights to be re-routed, officials said.

Mount Tavurvur, which destroyed the town of Rabaul when it erupted simultaneously with nearby Mount Vulcan in 1994, rumbled to life early in the morning on the tip of the remote island of New Britain.

Una segunda explosión en el volcán Sabancaya, ubicado en la región Arequipa, se registró este lunes a las 20:39 hora local, según informó el Área de Investigación en Vulcanología del Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP).

De acuerdo al reporte, esta explosión fue registrada por las tres estaciones sísmicas-telemétricas y observada como cuatro eventos ocurridos uno tras otro, en cadena, liberando una energía total de 1151 megajoules y teniendo una duración de 82 segundos.
