Reinforcing Synergies between Development and Climate Change

A team of climate experts investigates the climate catastrophe that is brewing in countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. They discover victims of climate change who never made the headlines and find evidence that climate change has already started to hurt the countries' economies.

Thirty-two countries* will participate in a full-scale tsunami alert exercise in the Caribbean on 20 March 2013. The goal is to test the reaction capacity in countries of the Caribbean and adjacent regions, including the East Coast of Canada and the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and Bermuda. The exercise was organized under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

• Durante el mes de octubre, la FAO publicó las nuevas cifras de subnutrición en el mundo. De acuerdo a éstas, hoy existen 868 millones de personas que pasan hambre a nivel mundial y 49 millones de personas en igual condición en América Latina y el Caribe. Si bien esta cifra representa un avance en la región respecto al trienio previo (2007-09) el ritmo de reducción de la subnutrición se ha reducido como consecuencia de las crisis económicas de los últimos años.

CIUDAD DE PANAMÁ, 6 de diciembre de 2012 – Un nuevo conjunto de herramientas busca garantizar la salud y la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional de las madres vulnerables y sus niños en América Latina y el Caribe en caso de eventos económicos externos adversos o desastres naturales.

Diseñado por expertos del Banco Mundial, el manual provee asesoría en programas de respuesta nutricional de emergencia para gestores de políticas en la región, que se reúnen en una conferencia especializada los días 6 y 7 de diciembre para evaluar la iniciativa.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, November 9, 2012 – The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) and the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of The University of the West Indies have entered into a partnership to enhance the Accelerometric Network in the Eastern Caribbean and Jamaica in order to strengthen the evaluation and mitigation of seismic risk across the region.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Sep 26 2012 (IPS) - Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas remembers how quiet – even uneventful – this tiny twin-island federation was for the first four decades of his life.

But over the past 10 years, St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as the rest of the Caribbean, have seen radical climatic shifts. There is no question in Douglas’s mind that these changes are the direct results of climate change.

1 INTRODUCTION

On 17 August 2012 the National Hurricane Centre released its first weather outlook on a tropical wave system which had formed off the coast of Africa. By the following day the system appeared to be better organised as it moved towards favourable environmental conditions for development. At 0900 UTC on 21 August 2012 this system was classified as a Tropical Depression (#9) and by 2100 UTC it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Isaac.
