  1. Bangladesh - Tropical Storm Mahasen struck southern districts on 16 May. The Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) is ongoing and preliminary findings are due to be presented tomorrow (21 May). 17 people have reportedly lost their lives, JNA results will provide a better understand of the impact of the cyclone on shelter and livelihoods.

Habitat for Humanity China to rebuild homes in quake-hit Qionglai city in Sichuan

Bangkok, 20th May 2013 – Habitat for Humanity China, part of international non-government housing organization Habitat for Humanity, today announced that it will support families in Qionglai city affected by the recent Sichuan earthquake. It will help them rebuild homes in Maping village in Tiantaishan town and Jingkou village in Gaohe town, as part of its ‘Sichuan Post-Earthquake Rebuilding Projects’.

Strong production generally kept domestic prices around the region stable or drove them slightly down for wheat, wheat flour and rice, except in India and Myanmar where government procurement programmes pushed prices higher. Overall, however, prices were mostly higher than at the same time last year, according to FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS).

Deadly torrential rain affects 200,000 in Guangxi

NANNING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Continuous rainfall has claimed a life while affecting about 200,000 people in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local authorities said on Sunday.

As of Saturday, the heavy rain, which started on Thursday, has battered 14 counties in Guangxi, said a statement from the regional department of civil affairs.

The weather has left 199,700 people affected and over 12,100 displaced in Guangxi, according to the statement.

53 killed by rain and floods in S. China

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Heavy rainfall and hailstorms continue to sweep through southern China. Fifty-three people have been killed and several others are reported missing.

Ten provinces have been affected, including some in central China. Guangdong province has been worst-hit, with rainstorms battering five cities, including the provincial capital Guangzhou. At least 22 people are reported to have been killed, with 16 people reported missing in the province.

Strong biosecurity measures needed to contain bird flu Implementing strong biosecurity measures coupled with good hygiene are required to contain the spread of the H7N9 strain of avian influenza virus, Hiroyuki Konuma, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific told a press conference in Bangkok on April 11. The virus had infected 82 people and killed 17 in China by April 19.

One dead, four missing in east China landslide

NANCHANG, May 16 (Xinhua) -- One woman has died and another four are missing after a rain-triggered landslide hit a tree farm in east China's Jiangxi Province Thursday morning, local authorities said.

Five female workers were buried in the landslide, which happened between 3 and 4 a.m. at the Wanling tree farm in Da'e township of Xinfeng County, the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said in a statement.

As of 2 p.m., rescuers had found one body and were still searching for the missing four, the statement said.

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-three people have died and 12 others were reported missing in the latest round of rain- and hailstorms that have swept south China, the country's civil affairs and disaster reduction authorities said Thursday.

Since Tuesday, rainstorms have triggered flooding and landslides in some places, according to sources with the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction.

BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-five people have died and 14 others were reported missing in the latest round of rain- and hailstorms that have swept south China, according to official statistics collected as of 8 p.m. Friday.

Hardest-hit Guangdong Province reported 36 deaths and 10 missing persons, according to the National Committee for Disaster Reduction.

On Monday 13 May, continuous rain and consequent floods have affected more than 3.47 million people in 204 counties and cities in 12 provincial-level regions.

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the provinces of Hunan and Guizhou are the most affected regions.

A total of 19 people reported dead, 187,000 are in urgent need of resettlement and assistance. The rain has toppled some 5,000 houses, damaged another 46,000 and destroyed 26,900 hectares of crops.

Further grant approved for earthquake victims in the Mainland

The Government has accepted the advice of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee and approved today (May 16) a grant of $2.5 million from the Disaster Relief Fund to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, China to provide emergency relief to the earthquake victims in Sichuan.

Officials reach out to refugees following fighting in Shan state

State officials and political parties in northern Shan state are trying to convince residents to return to their villages after thousands of locals fled from their homes after fighting erupted between the Shan State Army-South (SSA-S) and the military earlier this month.

Last week, approximately 2,000 locals from 19 villages fled as hundreds of Burmese soldiers launched an assault on a SSA-S position near the Sino-Burmese border. Many of the villagers reportedly crossed the border into China.

New round of rain wreaks havoc in C China

CHANGSHA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- One person died and 270,000 others were affected by a new round of rain in central China's Hunan Province, authorities said Wednesday.

The deceased victim died after a house collapsed due to a rain-triggered landslide in a village in Zhujiapu Township, Changde City, said a spokesman from the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

It was the second round of rain to hit the region in the last 10 days. It destroyed 1,760 houses and damaged 11,300 hectares of crops, the spokesman said.

Women affected in Lushan quake to get aid

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- A medical aid program will provide financial help for women affected by the earthquake that struck southwest China last month, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation announced on Sunday, which is Mother's Day.

Women in rural areas of Lushan, Baoxing and Tianquan counties in Sichuan Province will get assistance of 3,000 yuan (488.4 U.S. dollars) per person if their medical costs caused by the quake exceeds 5,000 yuan, the foundation said.

In the worst-hit old seat of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, local officials, residents and primary school students offered flowers in front of a monument engraved with the moment of 2:28 p.m.,May 12, 2008, when the massive quake struck.

Rainstorms kill six, affect over 1 mln

NANCHANG, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms have battered southern and eastern China over the past five days, killing six people in Hunan Province, local authorities said Saturday.

Contiuous strong rain started to hit the central China province on Monday killing six people, the Hunan provincial flood prevention and drought control headquarters said.

As of Saturday, rainstorms have affected about 850,000 people, toppled more than 2,200 homes and forced 14,000 citizens to relocate in Hunan.
