Normal start in bi-modal zone and a good progression of the season in Guinean-Sudanian zone

KEY MESSAGES

• February to April rainfall estimates (RFE) indicate that the onset of rains occurred earlier than normal this season with generally above normal rainfall levels in the bi-modal zone, as well as the southern part of the Guinean-Sudanian zone. According to medium term forecasts, an on time or early onset of the rains is expected for the northern part of the Guinean-Sudanian zone.

NOUAKCHOTT, 24 avr 2013 (AFP) - Vingt millions de personnes vivant au Sahel, dont 4,3 millions au Mali, connaissent une situation alimentaire "grave", a affirmé mercredi à Nouakchott le président de la Fédération internationale des sociétés de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge (FICR).

"Quelque 20 millions de personnes dans tout le Sahel font encore face à des pénuries (alimentaires) graves" a dit le président de la FICR, le Japonais Tadateru Konoé, à l'ouverture d'une réunion du Groupe Sahel plus.

ECOWAS and its partners have achieved another milestone in their stride towards the elimination of malaria in the region with the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a biolarvicides factory in Port Harcourt, capital of Nigeria’s south eastern Rivers State.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission His Excellency Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo and Nigeria’s Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who represented President His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, unveiled the plaque at a well-attended ceremony on Thursday 11th April 2013.

The meeting, called the ‘dialogue tree’ after a concept borrowed from African traditions, focused on initiating a discussion among key human rights stakeholders as the sub-region faces new threats to human rights and stability due to the crisis in Mali.

Successful first test of Tsunami Warning System for the North Atlantic and Mediterranean

The exercise organized on 27 and 28 November to evaluate the functioning of the Tsunami Warning System for the North East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adjacent Seas has taken place as scheduled. This real-time simulation, based on four scenarios in which earthquakes provoked tsunamis in different regions, demonstrated that the communication system for sending and receiving alert messages to concerned national authorities, worked smoothly.

North Atlantic and Mediterrenean tsunami warning system put to the test

A simulated tsunami will strike the western and eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and the North East Atlantic shoreline on 27 and 28 November, to test the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System for the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas. The exercise, named NEAMWave12, is organized under the umbrella of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
